UC Coop wage

Hi! Recently, i have been admitted into UC with a major in biomedical engineering. I wonder how much can students in this major earn during their internships at UC in minimum and maximum. Thanks for your time!

We just attended an on campus tour. They used the number $10K per co-op but that wasn’t for a specific major. Hope that helps.

Here’s a link that shows coop salary ranges for different majors…

my daughter is an industrial design major. she has been on 3 co-ops so far. she has made between $15-$20/hour on her co-ops. she used that money to live on during her co-ops out of state to pay her rent and food and daily living. but remember you are also getting job experience which will help you when you graduate and look for a job good luck

Hi daapmom, how easy was it for your daughter to find co-ops and to move in and out of her dorm/apartment at UC? Being from out of state, I am wondering about the logistics involved in the process.

Hi @daapmom, how easy was it for your daughter to find co-ops and to move in and out of her dorm/apartment at UC? Being from out of state, I am wondering about the logistics involved in the process.
My daughter has been accepted to UC for ID and she’s trying to make her decision. How does your daughter like it so far?

we opted to purchase a home off campus where she lives and we rent out the other rooms to students. most students move off campus after freshman year and look for rooms in houses to rent and sublet rooms once they start the co-op rotations. most of the apartment buildings dont let them sublet their rooms

a bit more history. my daughter is graduating in may from ID DAAP. she has now completed 5 co-ops. i am unfamiliar with dorms and reserving your spot while you are away on co-op since she did not live on campus after her freshman year. We looked into renting a room off campus in an apartment but we were told that she could not sublet her room to another student while she was out of the area on a co-op so we would have to pay her rent for the apartment as well as rent out of state where ever she was doing her co-op. we opted to invest our money and buy a house and then rent out the rest of the rooms to other UC students while our daughter attended UC. there are many groups on facebook where students rent rooms in a house for a year and have the option to sublet their rooms to other students…it is very common. one such group on facebook is University of Cincinnati (UC) Housing, Sublets & Roommates. you might want to look into off campus housing by having your students look at houses or asking around to other students that are on opposite co-op schedules then they are. i hope this makes some sense??? many rooms they can rent in a house will actually come furnished or partially furnished. when she was out of state on co-ops we found most of the places for her to live on air b n b. it was a bit more expensive but there are many scammers out there and we knew it was a true place and she would not get ripped off…and it would be furnished with most amenities included. please send me a PM if you need any other questions answered. always glad to help

@flmom2018 You should call housing to be sure of the logistics, but I understand that students are not responsible for housing costs on co-op if they are in university-owned housing.

If you get housing through the university you can avoid the problem of having to sublet. The housing agreements are for one semester at a time when students co-op. During co-op you pay a fee of $465 for the semester.

Thank you all for your advice! The coop sounds very good. @daapmom how did you daughter like the school overall? Was it hard to find the coops?

@flmom2018 my daughter’s first co-op was hard to find she didn’t have a very good portfolio and wasn’t outgoing and confident enough to ask her advisor how to make it better. she did not get placed and had to find something on her own. it is not the norm for this to happen. all the rest of her co-ops were fantastic. she worked for owens-illinois where she has 29 pending patents on glass bottles and one of them that she helped work on was purchased by a company and won and award for recycle bottle of the year, she worked as hasbro and helped create two toys that are on the shelf right now (yellies! and lost kitties), she worked at apex supply chain where she designed a prototype that was featured at the National Federation Retail show and started the building and design of what little caesars is now using for their app and carry out portal. her last co-op was for global brands group which is located in the empire state building. global brands was going through a major rehaul and many departments were bought out by another company while she was there so there was not much work if any for her to do, but it was a learning experience as she got to see how a restructure and buyout affects a company. but she loved the perks of working inside the empire state building and living in the city.

@daapmom sounds like she’s had great experiences!!! I was debating whether it makes a difference to go to a big name school like Ohio State or Purdue vs. UC but it seems that UC has great opportunities for their DAAP students.
