Hey all. So I’m just gonna jump right into it. My whole life I dreamed of the college experience and being able to live on campus, do schoolwork, create friendships, etc. Well it never happened for me. I went to a community college, which I regret because I’m a very social person, and spoiler alert, its extremely difficult to have a social life, or any extracurricular life, in community college (at least at mine). So I held out hope that when I transfer I’d have 2 great years of that college experience. I got into UC Davis for Fall 2020, and because of the pandemic I never even step foot on campus. Turns out I completed enough units to graduate by the end of Fall 2021. UCs are reopening in the fall, so technically I will only ever get 1 quarter at UC Davis. I want to live on campus for both of the summer sessions and fall so at least I can somewhat experience UC Davis, but its extremely difficult to figure out that 7 month living situation. I’m at a loss because I have no friends, and none of that college experience I so desperately wanted. And its starting to seem like it would just be best to commute for the Fall 2021 quarter. What should I do? I feel at a loss.
My daughter went to Davis. There’s lots to do in the short amount of time that you will be there. During normal times it’s a very socially active campus.
There are students who will be going through summer sessions. Get a part-time job or volunteer at the school; you’ll meet a lot of people who will respond well to your social personality. My daughter had lab jobs that were not work-study jobs. They know that the kids need jobs, so there are lots of things you can do on campus. Make sure that you have your bike with the back fenders so you don’t get the freshman stripe in watery areas or in rain.
Go on the local Davis wiki page. Read through it and get comfortable with the community before you step foot on campus. Try to get a lease with Roommates who are moving out in December. Ask the housing office for help. Tell them exactly what you’ve written here. The apartment managers know that students move in and out in the summer and after each term. (My daughter was in a townhouse with 7 other girls. Each one had her own independent lease for the townhouse that was comprised of four bedrooms with bunkbeds in each bedroom. Whenever one of the girls was moving out the roommates would contact the housing office or friends. They maintained the civility and chaos with a very organizational chart of chores. They had to do it that way because no one was on the same work and school schedule since people were moving in and out.)You’ll have the option of North Davis or South Davis if you don’t pay for the ritzy, expensive transfer housing.
Transfer student housing is in West Village but I don’t know if they will allow you to live there for only one quarter.
The Sol at West Village website says that they are now offering short term leases. Have you checked into that?
What are your plans for after fall quarter? Will you be moving or staying in Davis and working?
Have you joined the Class of 2022 FB page? You might find housing and roommates there.
Hi!Thank you for your thoughtful response. I reached out to the housing office as you said and they told me they don’t have anyone with a contract ending in December. It seems somethings just aren’t meant to be.
As @lkg4answers suggested, go to the FB page, but use the 2021 transfer page:
I think I can post the link- https://www.facebook.com/groups/ucdavistransferclassof2021/
I saw that one but it is for the class of 2021 which graduates in 6 weeks. I couldn’t find a transfer class of 2022 FB group.
The 2021 grads should have some knowledge of rentals available. My daughter just sold a bunch of furniture to students moving into apartments for the summer.
I just requested to join both groups, I’ll keep you guys updated on how it goes!
