UC Davis: Possible masters conditional acceptance (GPA under a 3.0) FALL 2019

Hello all!

Since I cant find much on the web talking about my situation I decided to create a new discussion to pretty much understand my situation! So I applied to UC Davis’s Masters in Horticulture and Agronomy department in January of 2019. I have been talking to a potential graduate advisor since early summer of 2018 and we have been in constant contact and he said he can take me in as a graduate student, which is exciting!

The only thing I knew that was going to affect my application was my GPA. I am a community college transfer and had a 3.45 when I transfered to Cornell. I graduated Cornell with a 2.75 GPA and they are not combining both GPAS. I feel I have a strong application with internships with the Smithsonian…

Anyway I had met with my professor in Feb and said that I have made it to the next round but the only thing that may affect me was my GPA and did mention that my letter of recs were pretty strong. Once my application was seen by graduate admissions noting that my gpa was under a (3.0) they can obviously reject you or send your application to the dean for possible conditional acceptance. I called the graudate coordinator and she told me the situation (they were very nice) …this was two weeks ago and said it all depends when the dean can view my application… So I am left with no timeline of when someone will get back to me.

I am not sure how this process works but I am getting impatient and want an answer. I tried calling one of the deans and she said she forward my information to someone and I still haven’t heard back. Other questions I have: do they treat me like if im admitted and give me three quarters to meet the GPA and then they can show me the grants I was able to get? They never said I was waitlisted? So odd! Please help! Any information would be helpful to understand! Thank you!

It is very difficult to get admitted to grad school with a GPA under 3.0. I doubt continuing to call at this point will help. You have no acceptance in hand from what I can tell. Given that it is May, it is pretty late in the grad admissions cycle. Grad schools don’t usually tell people if they are “waitlisted”, but they might be waiting to hear back from others they’ve made offers to. If you don’t hear by mid-May, maybe email the professor to see if that can find anything out.
