I am checking out this page: Freshman requirements
It says…
Freshman applicants are required to complete a minimum of 15 yearlong A-G courses with a letter grade of C or better in grades 9-12. Seven of these courses must be taken in the last two years of high school.
Eleven A-G courses must be completed prior to the 12th grade/last year of high school/secondary school. No particular course pattern is required for this review.
A specific 11-course pattern is required for consideration in UC’s Eligibility in the Local Context (ELC) program and must be completed prior to the beginning of 12th grade.
However I cannot find the mentioned 11-course pattern anywhere. Does anyone know about it?
We will identify the top 9 percent of students based on GPA in UC-approved coursework completed in the 10th and 11th grades. To be considered for ELC, you must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 and complete the following A-G courses prior to your senior year:
History |
1 year |
English |
2 years |
Mathematics |
2 years |
Science |
1 year |
Language other than English |
1 year |
Other A-G courses |
4 years |
(chosen from the subjects listed above or another course approved by the university) |

Wow, thanks a lot!
My S26 was planning to complete his arts requirement of 1 year in 12th. Otherwise he will be done with 13 of the 15 classes by 11th is finished. So I guess we are safe there!
You do understand what the ELC means?
“The ELC program ensures that academically talented and deserving California resident students from all over the state have the opportunity to join us at UC.”
It identifies a student in the top 9% of his/her high school class.
It does not ensure that wherever the student applies (UC), admission will be guaranteed at that school. If your child is rejected from his desired UC choices, the ELC does provide an option to attend a UC school that has room; and right now, that school is Merced.
At our children’s high school, the majority of their classmates, in all of their AP classes, received an ELC letter. It’s really not that “exclusive”, but it does let you know that Merced will be an option if your child applies to the UC’s and doesn’t receive an offer from any of the other UC’s.
There is also a Statewide ELC which is linked here: Statewide guarantee | UC Admissions
Once the student submits their UC application, you can log back into the UC application and then go to the link that says “View how your application is viewed” it should show if the student is ELC eligible. A student can be both Local and Statewide ELC but it will only show that they are ELC on the application.
Some HS’s will notify their students if they are ELC eligible (Local).
