okay so i know that SHIP is about health insurance. I’m just so confused on what the benefits are for applying. Is it recommended to apply to SHIP?
If the school’s SHIP is better health insurance coverage than what your parents have for you, then use the SHIP.
If your parents’ insurance has better coverage, then apply to waive the $2500 fee that is added to your bill.
You don’t “apply to SHIP”, they automatically stick it on your bill.
If you are covered under your parents health plan, it is much more reasonable to stay on their plan and less expensive. Only apply if you cannot stay on your parents plan.
How do you waive ship ?
@Eager4acceptance, Each school is different in how they have you waive it. Some have you fill out a waiver form and then have you fax in the pages. Make sure you have a copy of your complete insurance coverages (with the percentages of cost that the insurance company will reimburse). Your parents should be able to print it out for you from their online account.
Our Blue Cross insurance runs about 12 pages. Yes, our kids’ schools want all of them.
In the pre-enrollment checklist on your myadmissions page, click on complete your ucd health insurance requirement and one of the requirements will be a health insurance. The section will also provide you with a link to the uc ship waiver application. Make sure to check the requirements to be waived from uc ship also!
At least at UCSD, if you are planning to apply to waive SHIP them you must show that your primary care physician is within a designated distance from the campus. If not then you must purchase SHIP or another policy that will meet that requirement. We were able to waive SHIP the 1st year but the 2nd year the distance was changed and we had to buy SHIP. I believe all of the UC’s have a similar requirement.
