UC system increasing '09 Tuition 10% ($750)

For 2009 "...we are planning that there will be a 9-10 percent increase in student fees. In this scenario, a 10 percent increase on a $7,500 education-fee base..."

01.22.2009 - The state of Berkeley's budget

The UC Chancellor seems to be playing this possibility down; in the meantime, these two clowns are talking about what they're going to do with the loot.

berkeley's tuition base it $7,500? i thought it was closer to $9000?

Yup. $8932 for fees. Included in the fees, however, is $1276 for health insurance (brings it down to $7656).

I have to say that I surprised my daughter the other day when I told her that I was one of the first at the UC system to pay anything and I think our first quarter "fees" were $150. When she's looking at colleges with $40,000 tuition, the concept of $450 to pay for a year is pretty hard to understand. Of course, I'm an oldie but she already knew that.

In 1967 it was more like $67 per quarter and about $1,000 per year for the dorms. In 1980, law school at UC Berkeley was $600 per semester.
