If you intend to transfer to another UC while currently enrolled at a UC campus, when is the best time to apply? Is it after freshman or sophomore year? Are the chances greater when you try to transfer after sophomore year? (please no judgements on why I want to transfer)
Also, does it matter if the only reason you want to transfer is because a certain UC campus was a dream school and you want to give it one more try. Or do you stand a chance only if you have a compelling reason such as financial / family reasons to transfer?

The best time and chance to transfer to a UC is when you meet the minimum 60 semester/90 quarter units along with the required transfer courses. For the majority of students, this is after 2 years at your current school. If you start at a UC with significant UC transferable classes from HS due to DE, then meeting the requirements after 1 year is possible.

The UC’s do not ask the reason for your transfer so you do not have to elaborate unless it is part of your PIQ essays.
Attending a CC to UC is the best chance for transfer since CA CC applicants get priority over UC to UC transfers and course articulation is available through assist.org.
