major: mechanical engineering (maybe chemical engineering, not sure yet)
In-state: Yes [so transferring from a CA CC]
IGETC: no
major prep: calculus 1-3, linear algebra, diff eq, all physics series, all general chemistry (1 and 2), matlab programming
EC: various clubs (math, chemistry, stem, beach volleyball, 2020 a year without war)
…volunteer: in some of the clubs above, math tutor when in high school, built houses in 3rd world country
GPA: 3.41 or 3.51 if it all goes well Fall '15 semester
My essay should be good
Planning on applying to UCSD, UCSB, UCI, SDSU, CSULB, SJSU
Do you guys think I have a chance? would my chances be higher for ME or CHE?

Yes but let’s take out the microscope.

Please list classes and grades. Did you take statics or any other engr courses? Mention here.

Could be trouble. This is why I am asking for more detail.
@jsm2015 Physics series: Mechanics of Solids and Fluids (C+), Electricity and Magnetism (taking this fall), Heat/Light and Modern Physics (planned spring '16)
Calculus I (A+), Calculus II (B), Linear Algebra and Multivariable Calc. (taking both this fall), Diff Eq (planned spring '16)
Gen Chem I (A-), Gen Chem II (planned spring '16)
No engineering courses cuz none were articulated on the assist website for my college
I know that Calc II and Mechanics of Solids and Fluids grades is a little low but it was because I took too many courses that semester and it added up at the end. But this semester I’m just taking Calc III, Linear Algebra and Electricity&Magnetism so I’ll have more time to focus on just those. I’m expecting at least A, A, B (which would make my gpa 4.1), but if I get A,A,A (then gpa will be 5.1)

Physics series: Mechanics of Solids and Fluids (C+)

This puts everyone except the Cal States in jeopardy. Remember that physics is the mother science of engineering.
Please lower your course load and get straight A’s. That C+ is like two strikes at the plate for UCI and UCSB.
You’ll need to get some research experience by working with faculty at your school or at a place nearby. Start looking for projects and be prepared to work part-time on/off campus. You will also need to explain away your lower grades by discussing any projects you’ve worked on and how your performance earlier is not indicative.
