UCB or UCSD Bioengineering

Story: I was just accepted as a transfer for fall 2006 to UCSD. I've already submitted by intent to register at Berkeley for spring 2007.

When I logged on to the admissions site and saw this, I let out a long, hard "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO." I really like Berkeley more intellectually, geographically, etc (I'm a bleeding-heart liberal pansy), but at this point in my college career, I figure I should probably consider the job opportunities afforded to me by each of these schools. What I'm asking from you all is to tell me what, if any, limits would a UCB degree put on me in terms of job placement and/or what, if any, benefits would a UCSD program give me.

UCSD...but what's the point? u already submitted your SIR...now unless you live close to UCSD there's no point in going there for two quarters

THERE WILL BE NO LIMITS FROM a UCB DEGREE--that's ridiculous.

I was under the impression that I could take back my SIR (lose the 100 bucks) and go somewhere else.

You can. I would only do it if starting in the spring is the big concern.

My concern is with the how these schools are ranked (13 vs 3 or something), and how big a deal that is. I don't really care about waiting until spring.

And which ranking would that be? Rankings are very dubious--especially when both schools are in the top 10, 15 or 20.

Those are USNews rankings.

Bio-tech companies are always courting UCSD students. When I walked into UCSD's career office about a month I saw some representatives from Merk and other big namers.

UCSD is famous for it's bio but I'm sure UCB is just as good.

The only think I think would hold you back would be the liberal activist stigma that comes with a Berkeley degree. Though your a liberal yourself, so I don't think you would want to work for anyone that looks down on or uses that as a central criteria for employment.

To quaternions, May I know how can you tell you are admitted to UCSD's bioengineering? Is it shown in the admittance page?
I got "undeclared" as my major.

That's a good point. No admitted student at UCSD is guaranteed a spot in the program.

Oh wow, I hadn't checked the other pages, and I, too, am listed as undeclared on the UCSD website. So I guess my next question would be what would I have to do -- gpa, how hard is it, etc -- to get into the major were I to go there?

The department reviews you. I think you need the prereqs done.

I have a frd who applies bioeng and biochem as alternative.
He got admitted to biochem DIRECTLY...
so i think we still have a chance to get into bioeng.
Also, as I read the transfer faq, every engineering major is impacted major, therefore if both our choices are major and we are admitted to UCSD, our major will show "Undeclared".
I sent a email to the admission office, and here is the reply:
Thank you for the email. Applicants who applied to impacted majors
will be notified directly by the department of their entrance into the
program or an alternate major. Unless, the alternate major is also an
impacted major, then the applicant must be qualified for the alternate
major as well. Otherwise, it will show up as undeclared.

Please contact Noemy Ellis at (858)534-6105 or email ess@soe.ucsd.edu
for questions regarding impacted majors in Engineering.

Please allow at least one week for us to update your file on your
coursework update/correction.
