UChicago Class of 2023 Applicants

@kjkrnph thanks! Do you write to your regional counselor (email on website) or upload the letter to the portal?

Son was rejected ED :/… 1320 SAT, 27 ACT, and stellar ECs. We are in shock! With solid standardized testing like that, and being a member of the National Honors Society for 3 years straight, you would think he’d have a better chance! Oh well, there are always other options out there… Funny story actually…he meant to apply early to University of Illinois Chicago but accidentally applied ED to University of Chicago! What a clutz my boy is! Oh well, it was probably for the best. Too many nerds at UChicago!!

@collegereadyguy you probably figured out by now that the UIC/UC thing is an intelligence test. Those who apply to the correct school increase their odds substantially.

Good luck to you/your son whatever the path in life.

One comment regarding LOCI earlier upthread: in addition to documenting what UChicago means to you, you should also clearly say what what you will bring with you to enrich UChicago - research desire, community engagement, activism, tutoring, RSO involvement, chairty work, etc.

Don’t be afraid to get very specific ie.: ongoing research at the Univeristy and how you see your fit in that piece of the puzzle based on current ECs, Field of study, personality, etc.

@collegereadyguy sorry to hear. It’s a pure numbers game and difficult to stand out in a crowd where everyone has amazing stats. Why there is such an emphasis placed on engagement and the essays at UChicago.

In the RD round they turn away 1600s/35+ in volume.

You say too many, I say not enough

If anecdotal evidence is to be believed, the current crop of UChicago College population is definitely less nerdy, more well off and far more trendy than it used to be a few decades ago.

Imagine 70% of the entire College class are all Snitchcock type of nerds

There are still plenty of nerds. Because the college is more than 3x it’s old 1980’s size, they can really broaden the kind of student they attract. But even back in the 1980’s the place still attracted the gregarious. Remember that the mystique of social awkwardness has been with the College for ages now. They can try to kill off ole’ Ari Schwartz, but he’s simply too much a part of the fabric of the school to die completely. He’ll always be around in some form or other.

@binbon My son emailed his LOCI to the regional counselor. fbs makes a great point about LOCI and also writing about what you can bring to the university. Be specific and show that you know what UChicago is all about and why you’re a good fit.

@collegemomjam Thanks, so relieved the college drama is over. What a process this has been. It was too late to withdraw 3 of D’s EA apps, the decisions were too close to her ED. She’s now notifying all 5 schools she applied to EA. The 3 that have released decisions and the 2 that haven’t. Apparently you have until you pay the deposit at your ED school. I suppose you can just let things ride, but that seems really unethical. She was accepted at 2 schools both of which have ED2. By withdrawing she frees up a spot at each school. I think. I’m a novice.

@collegereadyguy I’m not an expert but I know your son has plenty of options with a 1320 SAT and stellar ECs assuming he has a high GPA as well. The comment about intelligence is uncalled for. It’s overwhelming applying for college. The process is unfamiliar and the pressure to meet the Nov 1 ED deadline is crushing. It is easy to get confused. Keep in mind many kids have extra support. Our D has a college counselor at school with only 45 cases (girls she works with). She sat with our daughter and helped her submit every application. Our D would have missed her ED deadline AND applied to the wrong school without her counselor’s help, her anxiety was so high. Her intelligence however, never would have waned. Your son will do very well.

This is sort of late, but I wanted to throw my story into the bunch. I got accepted through Early Action yesterday! 35 ACT, 4.47 GPA, section leader in marching band, president of several clubs, and head of a few volunteer commissions around my neighborhood. I didn’t do the optional video.
I can’t wait to meet everyone else in the Class of 2023, I’m sure y’all are amazing <3

@BinBon It probably won’t matter which major your child puts on the application. UChicago states that once a student attends the school, the student will have access to the entirety of their offerings.

@Echo19389 Were you accepted? I am a recruit as well!

Deferred

I was deferred, going into ED2

If you were deferred EA don’t do ED2… you must go RD.
Chances:

  • EA to ED2: Is for recruits only. To up their grades and/or tests … that’s it. All regular candidates Will be denied. They just decided not to admit, why would they change it. Chances 0% think who else is in this catergory. All outstaning candidates applied ED or EA. At this stage the only outcomes are Accept or Deny.
-EA to RD: you have a shot because you were not denied. Sure the stats look low. But remember, if you were deffered with Act 34/35, most others applying ED will be lower. U will have better chances here.
This is not based on uChicago’s analysis. This is new to them.
Every other institution that had ED2 uses this policy…
Uchicsgo’s pure stats are too low for roll of the dice. If this was Upenn its a different story…
Search for common data set upenn. Every school has it, except uchicago and yale.
You should have applied ED1. They filled half the spots ED1, A quarter of the spots gets filled EA (these kids applied to ivys), MINIMAL ED2, a quarter RD
Go ED and try your lucks at other IVYs

@ChunkyCat Where are you getting this information and these stats?

Time for some sanity to prevail:

They are likely to admit only 2200 for Class of 2023, based on Boyer’s comments earlier this fall. Nondorf’s comments last winter suggest about 1100 students were admitted early for Class of 2022. Assuming that stays the same, that leaves another 1100 for ED2/RD. It will depend on the quality of the class but even if @ChunkyCat is correct that a quarter of the admitted class will be RD (so 550 - 600), that leaves about 500 - 550 to be admitted ED2. That’s probably consistent with other years. While 550 is a small number, it’s not as big a pool as RD so the admit rate - even assuming that up to 2,000 EA’s switch over (and that’s probably a high number) - will still be better than with RD. Admit rate doesn’t translate into personal probability, of course. Most who were deferred will NOT be admitted ED2. But some will.

Recruited Athletes will take up some of that 550 but that happened in prior years as well.

@ChunkyCat a good deal of incorrect and misleading information to other applicants in your post. I am trying to understand your logic, but at the end of your argument you state “go ED and try your luck at other Ivys”

You cannot do that if you and your guidance counselor follows the rules

Also a good portion of recruited athletes are brought in ED.

Based on Dean Nonsorf’s speech from 2022 thread ed2 had about 17% admit rate same as ED1. RD about 4 or lower. According to him EA who chose not to ED2 were 0.5%!! This Doesn’t say anything about EA those ED2. So @ChunkyCat message about EA to ED2 is not accurate. With UC you need to show commitment more than other Ivies/top schools. 50% of class is filled by ED 1 or 2. Chunk of remaining would be hooks, URMs etc.
