Yield c. 75 percent.
Which is a function of how heavily the school relied upon ED last round. So not a relevant stat when comparing UofC to elite schools that don’t have ED (HYPSM).
Just under 1780. From the mouth of Jay Ellison.
All sitting in Rockefeller waiting for Convocation to begin.
Saw Nondorf walking in smiling and greeting and congratulating the families. Leather binder in hand. Hoping it contains the relevant stats.
re: post# 121
I understand perfectly SCEA is the not same as ED but they practically have similar effect in the most mysteriously way.
Dean Boyer said 1740 students.
@JBStillFlying Every time I have seen Nondorf he is all smiles - must really love what he does.
1740…how many is that overenrolled by, if any?

They don’t have the same effect on yield. And, to the extent that yield is a meaningful indicator for ranking the desirability of various schools, you can’t compare ED schools to EA schools.* Any of the SCEA schools could have a 95%+ yield rate if they adopted ED and limited offers to kids who applied that way. And those are schools that could generate a sufficiently strong pool of ED applicants that their median stats needn’t drop if they were to take such an approach. But they don’t do it because they believe they get a better class (both in terms of fit and diversity) by letting applicants sort themselves out over the course of the admissions process rather than by forcing them to make a binding commitment before they know what other options are available to them.
FWIW, for the class of 2020 (Pre-ED), Chicago’s yield was 62-66% (latter announced in May – former in October), which was comparable to Princeton’s IIRC. The jump in the next year is clearly attributable to an admissions policy change rather than increased interest in/desirabilty of the school. Overall, applications to UChicago went down last year.
*Important qualification: It is significant when an ED school has lower yield than an EA school.
If I have my way in the admission office, I’d rather Chicago take the SCEA path; but that did not happen. I am still thrilled with the potentially high yield regardless.
@exacademic I don’t think @theluckystar was talking about yield.
I wonder if the 1,740 included transfers as they were welcomed along with first years …
Total Hum (core) enrollment is about 1774 IIRC. That’s consistent with the “just under 1780” remark. Perhaps it includes transfer students. If so, then 1,740 are actual first years and 34 or so are transfer students, That’s one way to mesh Boyer’s and Elison’s statements.
1780 including transfers. Very few transfers
I’ve been reading all of your posts on this board, and thank you so much for all of the knowledge that you’re imparting! So happy that UoChicago made #3 this year (again!). My son was accepted off the Z list and will be attending next September. We love the prestige of the school, but I’m so excited that he’ll be educated at UoChicago. Also, I can’t wait to walk around campus next year, as the campus is gorgeous. Has anyone eaten at this new pizza place? Hoping it’s close to his dorm, wherever that happens to be:
If they are on 55th that would be the first floor of North (the newest res. hall). North is impressive enough from the outside - haven’t been inside. So this new pizzaria will be very close enough to North, Max P. and Snitch. As for the others - no worries as kids can easily hit the place after class or before an evening study session at the Reg (also close).
@uocparent We ate at Nella last weekend. It’s located in North at the corner of 55th and University - right next to the boba bar that has not opened yet. The food is not bad - a lot more upscale and expensive than the usual college pizza joint (think burrata, truffle ravioli, prosciutto pizza along with the usual items). We saw quite a few students there - small tables of 2 to 4 and 2 separate groups of 10+ students. It looks like they are planning on having a large outdoor seating area which should be nice.
Don’t forget the bowling alley in the parking structure! Hard for a kid to assume the posture of an ascetic fakir* with a pizza slice in one hand and a bowling ball in the other (though I can just about imagine a maggotty-minded monk* carrying that off).
*Terms commonly applied to U of C students
@marlowe1 please acknowledge your intellectual debt to me with a footnote as you use my expression “ascetic Fakir” …
and note : eschew all carbs …
