I am considering both universities, Chicago for economics and University of Toronto for commerce (accepted to both). My dilemma is as follows: I received no aid from Chicago, while at UofT I will be studying on full scholarship. As much as I love Chicago, and would love the challenge of its rigorous academics, the cost is becoming a painfully significant issue.

I would appreciate any input in regard to both the quality of education and the relative prospects for graduate school placement for both universities.

LOL You are comparing the best to the worst.

UCHICAGO is world renowned in economics.
U of T's commerce program is a absolute joke. Basically you can just sleep past high school (provided that you at least pass the courses) and get in no problem.

But 40k is a lot of money compared to a free ride. If it was up to me, I would find as many sponsors/university lenders as possible and go to uchicago- actually I would die before I choose uoft commerce over uchicago economics.

Find some money some how, and go to chicago. You will be so much better off. Hell, learn the stock market, if that's what it takes to get some extra money.

I'm actually surprised to hear the the commerce program at UToronto is really bad. UToronto overall has a very good reputation. Their medical school is one of the top schools in Canada. I guess commerce is one of its weaker points...

we can't judge how much you value money. all we are capable of saying is that your utility decision is comparing (bad school)+free vs. (good school)+$40k

Thank you all for your responses. But for the second part of my question, can you speak to the relative strengths of the schools in terms of graduate placement (i.e. law schools)?

UChicago>UofT, especially in business-related fields. I'm not sure about law, but I am sure that the opportunities available to you at Chicago will far outweigh those available to you at UofT.

Also, any knocks against UChicago's social life just aren't valid here--UofT's is supposedly AWFUL, and Toronto sucks anyways. You should have applied to McGill, at least.

Toronto is an amazing city. much prefer it over Montreal. I have lived in both cities and U of T at Scarborough has a great business program. Much better than the main campus. Why don't you go there, if finances are a concern.

neither school is especially good for law schhol placement. law schools put a huge amount of weight on ugrad gpa, and for this reason, chicago's average gpa of 3.3 makes it more difficult for students there to get into top law schools. however, canadian grade deflation is absolutly horrid. you would be putting yourself in a very difficult position if your goal is to get into law school form toronto.

The only people who don't know how to have fun in toronto are 905ers. I am out six days a week. There so much to do in the city. In montreal how many times can you go the same four five places and see the same people. toronto has more dance clubs ber capita than New York City. Torontoians are self important but uptight isn't a description I would use to describe us. We have gay marriage and are decriminalzing marijuana -- that's hardly uptight.

Montreal is a fascinating city, but it is uncompareable to Toronto.

ibkid, if you did some research you would know I am right. I am planning on going into Business/Economics, and have exhausted the information for both schools.
UofT has excellent medical and engineering schools, but their commerce programs is unfavorable. A student only needs high 70's to get into UofT commerce, whereas another student with incredible gpa, SATs, and ECs could be waitlisted or even rejected from Uchicago Economics.

You should be considering how lucky you are to be accepted.

dooit: Which university are you looking to for business?

Stanfreud: I'm just curious. Do you have any sources for your knowledge of grade deflation in Canada? Although I have heard horror stories about the difficulty of first and second year at UT, I know quite a few of my close friends who are achieving decent to excellent GPAs. Again, if you could confirm this that'd be much appreciated.

I'm only reporting what I've heard, however these numbers seem to indicate, at the very leat, that Harvard doesn't like U of T students (nor does it especially like chicago students).

Wharton(for business)But that is only a dream.

As for economics, UCHIcago. Again, if I were you I would try anything to go to Uchicago. Who knows, maybe if you are really talented, you might be a recipient of the Nobel Prize :-P ...But no chance if you are UofT commerce graduate, because it just stinks that bad:)
