0 cost is a lot to turn down, but 40-60k worth of debt, especially if it's in federally subsidized loans is not an impossible burden.

I think you need to discuss how aid will change at UChicago over time and you need to soul search on the doctor thing quite a bit. As has been said in this thread, many people do the pre-med (and sometimes doctor) thing for all the wrong reasons. The choice, IMO, is clearly Pitt with a full ride IF you're singularly focused on getting into medical school. The less likely you feel you want to pursue medicine, the more I feel that UChicago is probably a better choice, especially considering you've got 40k in grant money to help you out.

Your family income is 53K? Wouldnt that qualify you for the Odyssey Scholarship at least for one year? That would cover almost everything.

Yes, I think it would, although I have yet to get the final finaid offer. The thing is, after the first year, tuition would probably skyrocket.

Only about 1/3 of your parents income is calculated into the EFC, if I recall, so even though your family income has doubled the expectation may increase less than you might think since your savings and debt situation has not been altered significantly.

It’s when you have money in the bank and expensive assets that EFC goes up, not necessarily income. That’s why you should really talk to the financial aid department at UChicago and talk about the specifics with your situation.
