Good luck with the decision, OP. Hoping you end up with the Monroe from W & M just to really complicate matters, lol :)

$250k would pay for medical school. $250k would pay for an MBA and an apt. $250K would pay for law school and enable you to work a the non-profit you really care about that doesn’t pay well.

Or you could go to U of Chicago for 4 years. Nope. I don’t see it…

Don’t have time to read the whole thread, but…I am a huge fan of the U of C. Nevertheless, in your situation I think the choice is clear: go to UVa as an undergrad, and save the U of C for graduate school.

yet another vote for UVA! good luck- these are all great decisions to have

If you do a search of this site, you will find many well-informed discussions about the pros and cons of William and Mary vs. UVa. Many appeared over the years on the UVa and William and Mary boards. The consensus has been that the two schools academically are very comparable, so you need to get a personal feeling about both before you make a decision.

Washington and Lee however is an entirely different and probably less diverse environment.

I don’t think i’ve ever seen a CS&S thread with all the posts so united haha. The choice is clear OP: go to UVA.

U Chicago is the most depressing place I have ever visited. Real talk.

W&M has an intellectual, non conformist vibe like Chicago. W&L has more of a social scene like UVirginia. It just depends on what fits you best.

I agree w/ Hanna, sevmom and swish, if you love uchicago, you’re more likely to feel a better fit at W&M over UVA. Both are excellent schools but of the two, W&M is known for its intellectual vibe. My S1 loved uchicago too and he had a very hard time turning it down – it tied for his first-choice school. It’s an amazing school. He felt like he’d found his people. But, he’s happy where he decided to go. I’m sure you’ll be too, wherever you land.

@jkiwmom thanks for jinxing it! I just found out that I am a semifinalist for the Murray Scholar program at William and Mary. I am so grateful to have all of these choices (although there is only a 7% chance that I will get the Murray). Thank you everyone for helping me with my decision!

As the year has moved along I have accumulated more college options. While this isn’t a bad problem to have it can be anxiety-inducing at times. If anyone has any opinion/experience with these schools I would be so happy to learn more! My options include:

-The University of Chicago
-The University of Virginia (Echols Scholar)
-William&Mary (Monroe Scholar, full scholarship, potential Murray Scholar)
-Williams College (Early Write)

Thank you!

any financial aid with Williams?

The full scholarship at William and Mary sounds great. With Echols at UVa , there is no money involved. I assume your parents could get their money back that they paid into the Virginia pre -paid tuition plan if you took the money at William and Mary? Or the money could transfer to a younger sibling if you have one? You have excellent choices. Being able to come out of school debt free is a real gift. When you find out the money issue with Williams, it sounds like you will have the complete picture (unless you are still waiting on even more schools). Congratulations on such great acceptances and good luck with the decision!

there have been plenty of previous discussions on CC about UVa vs. WandM. I’d search for those thoughts, which included comments from some students who attended both (such as W&M undergrad and UVa grad).

UVa and William and Mary have very different vibes. Even though I have a UVa grad son , it does sound like William and Mary may be the better fit for the OP . Only she can decide. Kids that like UVa may not feel they could fit well at William and Mary at all ( my son was one of those and would not consider it) and vice versa. Good luck. Lots of great choices.

^^^^^sevmom, other than the obvious, size of undergraduate body, can you tell us a few of the reasons why a student might fit at Virginia and not W&M, and vice versa?

JamieBrown, I’m no expert on the reasons, that’s for sure. As charlieschm noted, there are numerous discussions that can be found about this on CC. In general, for my sons (instate), UVa and Virginia Tech were more appealing to them. They were/are the typical athletic, game playing bright guys. UVa son pretty preppy. Both sons in engineering(which William and Mary does not have-may have 3/2 but not sure- but UVa son also considered physics so we did look at William and Mary). Not interested in a more “quirky” , intellectual feel, smaller more LAC type of school with less emphasis on sports that William and Mary seems to have. William and Mary has more girls than guys and does not seem to be as attractive to guys . William and Mary is in a tourist area and that is a plus for some and negative for others. These are generalizations. Others will have other thoughts. Both great schools and we are lucky to have them as public choices in Virginia.

The Virginia Prepaid Education Plan (VPEP) is not restricted to Virginia public colleges. It can be used at private colleges and at out-of-state public colleges, but does not guarantee that it will cover the entire tuition. It can also be used for graduate school.

ajjynxsters, congratulations on your acceptances so far. Your parents have saved a nice amount of money that can be used for your eduction at virtually any college. The privates (e.g. U. Chicago, Williams, …) cost more than UVa, but not $250,000 more. Once you have all of your options on the table, you should discuss with your parents what they feel they can afford and what would suit your needs best. Do not dismiss any of your options without making a fair comparison. A large merit scholarship at William & Mary or at Washington & Lee might be attractive, allowing you to save some of your VPEP money for grad school or professional school.

Best of luck with your decisions. You will do well whatever you decide.
