Hi Grace,

I’ve been checking my UChicago application through the website for a while.

For a while, the Status page showed the usual stuff: “Application Received, Teacher Recs Received, etc.”

It never showed the Counselor Recs, or the Transcript, or the SAT scores but I thought these weren’t a problem, since I sent those in early-mid November and i thought it might take a while to match with my application.

Then, when I checked earlier this week, the Teacher Recs disappeared from the page, and now it just says “Application Received”.

I’m looking through my records and my counselor says she sent it (back in late October, no less…), and I have proof of a transcript request back in early December. But I can’t find proof of an SAT score report being sent anywhere even though I’m really sure I sent it.

And so now I’m panicking  - I’ve already sent another SAT report to Chicago express mail or something

So my questions:

1) Does the fact that my transcripts and counselor recs don’t show up on the portal mean that Chicago hasn’t received them??

2) Is there anyway to find out for sure if Chicago received my SAT scores (the old ones)?

3) Will it hurt my chances (assuming the SAT is the only thing they didn’t receive)?

Thanks,
sherpaofthewest

host and sherpa, we are still working through all of the material we have received through the mail and processing it in to your account, so please do not worry if not everything is registered as received just yet. We will likely begin contacting students in the first full week of February (note: not this coming week, the week after) if you have any missing materials. If you are not contacted, you may assume your application is complete.

UChicago:
Do the admitted students also need to send their mid-year report?

Hi,
I got admitted early, and I sent in my CSS profile late December and my FAFSA and income tax returns early January. However, my friend who applied regular just asked me about a financial aid application specific to UChicago and I’m freaking out because I wasn’t aware we had to fill out one (I still haven’t gotten my approximation yet). Do I need to fill out this application, where can I find it if I need one, and is it too late?

snow2008, yes, admitted students also need to send in a midyear report.

furedeikun, we no longer require a Chicago-specific aid application; we required this in the past and decided to only use the CSS Profile and FAFSA this year, so your friend may have seen this document referenced on a past year’s admissions publication. Sorry for any confusion-- you’ve sent in all of the necessary materials.

Thanks so much! And also, I graduated high school last year (taking a gap yr) . Would i be correct in assuming that i do NOT have to submit a midyear report? And if not, is there any specific method i need to use to inform UChicago of any accomplishments that I have made after submitting the application?

Thanks,
Sherpa

sherpa, you do not need to submit a midyear report if you graduated last year. Any accomplishments you have had this year may be uploaded in to your UChicago Account in the “Portfolio” section.

Hi Grace
I read somewhere that “It takes about one week from the time you submit your CSS PROFILE application for your information to be delivered electronically to the college.”

The deadline for CSS Profile is Feb 1. If I submit it today (Jan 31) then it is still acceptable right?

And for non-custodial profile, I only need to submit it online right? No need to mail?
Thanx

BlackBunny103, those dates are a submit-by date; although it will take longer to arrive in their office, they will know the document was submitted on time (before Feb. 1). No need to worry! And there is no need to re-submit documents in paper form that can be completed fully online.

My friend would like to know if the FAFSA and CSS Feb 1st date are hard deadlines or soft deadlines? She is not going to be able to send them in by tomorrow and is worried. Is this going to be a problem for her? Should she bother sending after Feb 1st or is her chances of aid severely hurt/ruined if she misses the deadline?

While we would of course prefer to receive these materials on time, all domestic admitted students will still have 100% of their demonstrated need met if materials arrive slightly past the deadline. Please be aware that if materials are sent past the deadline, you may not receive an aid package immediately with your offer of admission, should you be admitted.

Will supplemental letters of recommendation received by the Office of Admissions also show up under the Application Checklist on my UChicago Account?

curiouscat, all letters of recommendation will be accounted for as part of one line in your checklist, called ‘Teacher Recs’. While it will not say the number that we have received, you can assume it to include both required teacher recs and any supplemental recs we have received. There is no separate line item for additional teacher recs.

I was admitted to a top 23 school last year, but because of my dad’s financial problem I had to attend a community college. I want to transfer to UChicago as a Junior next year. Do you know UChicago has ever admitted CC transfers?

High school GPA: 3.86
CC GPA: 4.0 by now
SAT1: 2160
EC: many leadership positions, PTK member

Am I competitive?

Thank you.

It is our policy not to “chance” students or to evaluate whether or not they are competitive. We have admitted community college students as transfer students in the past and are certainly open to transfer applications from prospective community college transfer students.

UChicago,

Thank you for your reply. I am so glad to hear that UChicago have admitted community college transfer students. Can you tell at what percentage that admitted community collgege transfer students occupying total admitted transfer students?

Thank you.

My counselor uploaded my mid-year report to the Common App. Will UChicago be able to access that in due time, or do I need to take a further step in sending it?

My father is deceased, so I filled out the FAFSA/CSS profile with my mother and stepfather. Since there is no way to indicate that he is no longer alive on the documents, should I contact the office of financial aid to request an exemption from the Non-Custodial profile? What should I have ready? (My ID # issued on the admissions website, his death certificate, etc.?)

Hi Grace, my son is now studying in one of the top local high schools in Shanghai and is interested in applying for your school for undergrad study. Since the traditional course load in China is very heavy, and he has to study for AP courses, TOFEL, SAT in additional to his usual school curriculum, the time available for EC acitivities or volunteer work is really limited. Moreover, though the school has a lot of clubs for students to participate, the club time is the same so he can only choose one. As a result, though he is interested in MUN, JA, and has been selected to the school badminton team, due to time conflict of these clubs, he had to make a hard decision to give up the other two and join JA only. Of course, there were some one-off EC that he particiapted too, such as being selected the MC and member of the organizing committee for the school annual overnight alumni party (running 12 hours from 7pm to 7 am next morning). However, I think the overall hours in EC are still limited, so I wonder if such reality will put him at a disadvantaged position in application? Your advice is highly appreciated. Thank you.
