UChicago Questions? Ask an admissions counselor!

Yogamom, Grace, from the UChicago website:

If you already know the student with whom you wish to live, list his or her name on your application. Please note: That student must also list your name on his or her application for you to be assigned together as roommates. Roommate requests should have the same three buildings as preferences. The assignment will be made when applications have been received from both roommates and according to the date of payment of the enrollment deposit of the later of the two dates. A request for a roommate is viewed as a higher priority than a request for a particular residence hall.

Sorry for the delayed responses here-- our admitted student programs and some quick travel put CC on the back burner for a few days.

First off, Mutti, thanks for pointing this out-- yes, you are correct, the second roommate’s date of deposit now takes precedent.

Recently committed students with any financial aid questions should continue to direct these questions to college-aid@uchicago.edu. Students who will need a deposit waiver in order to attend should e-mail their regional admissions counselor with a short description of why the waiver is necessary. We are happy to provide deposit waivers for our neediest students, but you should include a brief description of why the deposit is unaffordable for your family at this time.

We hope that our admitted students will continue to achieve at the high level that helped them have UChicago as an option in the first place; that said, a few Bs in the second semester of one’s senior year has never been our hugest cause for concern. So, keep your grades steady, but don’t worry overly much.

bball9, students elect to come interview on campus any time after May 1. There are both disadvantages and advantages to an earlier interview; it can sometimes be a little more difficult for a student to indicate why UChicago is an attractive option so early in the process. However, we are happy to have students come interview in May or June-- especially as these dates may provide the easiest possible travel time for some students. It’s up to you as to whether or not earlier timing makes sense.

infiniteloop, although we always encourage our students to make final decisions about their rigor and options with their guidance counselors and parents, your schedule seems just fine to me. We’re not simply counting up the number of APs you take; we want your schedule to make sense for you and your interests while still incorporating your school’s most rigorous options. This is not just a key to “unlock the door” for UChicago, but something we hope will help prepare you for the rigor of UChicago. We HOPE that our students will have the time and interest to take some electives! I’d make sure you’re not sacrificing an important higher-level class to take a course like video production (say, not taking calculus as a prospective math or economics major), but overall, discuss the specifics with your guidance counselor and know that we hope you’ll find time to take courses in areas you enjoy.

How many students/what percentage of the students get merit scholarships? How do they evaluate the people who receive one? Also, is it too late now to get one? Thanks!

Grace,

My school only offers about four AP classes, Biology, English, Physics, and Calc. We can’t take both Biology and Physics, so I can only take three AP classes. Will this affect my application, and make it seem like I’m not taking rigorous enough classes? Will the admissions office recognize that my school doesn’t offer very many AP courses?

offbeat1, approximately 10% of our incoming class every year receives a merit scholarship.

cricket, yes, all schools provide information to us letting us know what kind of rigorous options exist at the school. We will recognize that your school does not offer many AP options and you will not be held at a disadvantage for your school’s offerings.

Hi Grace,
When do late June and July on campus interviews open up? Right now, it looks like one can only schedule an interview thru early June.
Thanks!

jojosophie, they should be up by mid May. We are still in the process of hiring our summer interviewers and will post available dates and times once schedules are more settled.

Hello Grace,

When are Waitlist Decisions going to come out? When will they Start to come out?

“And as of now, is there any estimates on if there will even be a waitlist?”

Thank you for volunteering your time to answer my questions. Thank you.

Grace, what about my question? (post 1054)
thanks!

shrey228, sorry, it got lost in the shuffle. You will need to contact the international team (internationaladmissions@uchicago.edu) with this questions.

Huntsmen, as I have noted before, we are likely not going to be able to notify most students of their wait list status until after May 1. We will have a closer approximation of the number or likelihood that students will be taken off of the waiting list in a larger group at that time.

Thanks, Grace!

A final answer to the question of visas for international students: We have not started processing materials for visa applications. We will send you an e-mail in mid-May with instructions and any forms that you need to complete in order to obtain a visa. In the meantime, you should fill out your housing application online through your UChicago Account if you have not done so already. Otherwise, no further action is required from you until you hear from us.

Have you contacted students on the waitlist?

Will UChicago be taking any students from the waitlist this year? If so, when?

^ wondering the same thing. is there any, at all, hope?

I already made a thread about this, but figured I should post here as well. Due to many reasons, most of which are personal, my grades went down this semester. I’m not worried about the A-'s and B+'s, but I do worry about two C’s that I got. I was admitted into Chicago (I don’t know how) with two B’s, in AP Calc AB and AP English. I got B- in both quarters before the finals, though. Now I’m looking at a C in both classes for the end of this semester. Will my admission be rescinded?

Grace,

My eldest son applied to UChicago this past year and was wait-listed. He withdrew his name voluntarily from the wait list. Will this impact the chances of admission of my senior to be twins who want to apply EA at UChicago this year?

muckdogs, this will not affect your other sons’ likelihood of admission. We look at students’ applications individually and a sibling’s prior application, regardless of the result, does not have any bearing on the subsequent applications of his/her siblings.

pmcm, I would encourage you to keep your grades as strong as possible. We rarely rescind a student’s application offer, and do so only in extreme circumstances, but it is still important for our admitted students to continue their strong records of high school success even in to their last semester of high school.

If an accepted and committed student had to take a medical leave during the last term of high school senior year, how likely is it that her admission would be revolked? She has enough credits to graduate without completing this term - so she will graduate. Please give me a general answer if you can. I don’t know what to do!
