UChicago Questions? Ask an admissions counselor!

Noticed that the blog only has the overall rate.

Oops-- they had posted the EA information after that round, but it looks like it was combined with our RD rate. I will post that information if we still have it separated out somewhere.

Thank you again so much for making this thread! It is absolutely invaluable!

I was wondering if the admission’s office ever reads the Questbridge applications of the Questbridge finalists, and if so, is it frowned upon if we re-use certain essays or concepts from our Questbridge application in our common app essay/supplemental essays? I know that other schools in fact encourage this recycling because they don’t want to overburden the students with essays, so I was just wondering about Chicago.

wohllln-- we do not read a student’s Questbridge application, only their UChicago Common App and Supplement. It is perfectly fine to for us if you want to reuse or repurpose ideas from the QB app on your common app.

Hello,

Do you consider a student’s AP scores for admissions? If so, should they be sent to UChicago or simply included on the Common App?

About SAT Subject Tests, though optional, is there an advantage to sending them if one has good scores on them? I sent two with my normal SAT, but took a third after that; would the third make any difference? It is listed on the Common App, so perhaps that would be sufficient…

Thanks!

How big of a role does the optional interview play in the admissions process? I think I remember a UChicago representative saying in an information session that the admit rate happens to be slightly higher among the students who decide to have interviews - is that true? And can a so-so interview hurt an otherwise decent application? Thanks!

harpsichorddude-- Students are not required to submit AP or SAT-II scores for admission, but we can consider any AP scores or SAT-II scores a student elects to submit to us. Both AP scores and SAT-II scores are usually a very small factor, if a factor at all, in our decision making; excellent scores tend to confirm what we already know (hopefully) from seeing correspondingly excellent grades and rigor in the coursework you took to help prepare for the test!

Hi! This may seem like a silly question, but I am super curious. My friend recently received a free T-shirt from Uchicago in the mail. What does a person have to do to get one too?

@coolapple1 @sa0209 I believe this is the link with the EA info that @UChicago was referring to:

Hi,

My child got a 700 bio and 740 math on the subject tests. She feels she can definately get a higher school on the bio, but there is a conflict on both Oct and Nov test dates with his sport.

We are trying to dedide it it makes sense to retake the bio test…would you recommend retaking? Does 40-50 points make a difference in admissions?

missing the sport tournaments would put him at a disadvantage in her sport.

Thank you.

Hello!

First of all, I’d like to thank you for doing such a great service for us all. It’s this kind of attention to detail/love labor that makes the school so great.

Now, my question: If I took an ACT last year as a junior and didn’t select any colleges to send the score to, and now, as senior, I am taking the test again in October, is there anything I would have to do so that only the highest scores appear, or would I just send both dates and the school would superscore it?

What is your acceptance rate for questbridge regular decesion?

I am an international applicant, aspiring to apply early action. Im unique in that I graduated from High school in 2008. Can I still apply to UChicago? If yes, will I need to maybe write an additional essay? And does my having a four-year hiatus greatly dim my chances of being accepted at UChicago?

UChicago,

As a rule of thumb, is a 10 percent variance above or below your 500 word essay limit acceptable if the essay is otherwise concise and on topic?

Thank you.

Hi,
I am an international prospective student and I was wondering if I should send an arts supplement even if I don’t intend to major in the arts.
Also, would it be possible to submit two works of music?

I promise this is my last question but does electronic music count as supplementary material?

Thank you,

Yo

Hello, I also have a question regarding the essays. With Question1 and Question2(optional), I wrote about 180 words, regarding it as a short question type while for Essay question, I wrote about 650 words. When you said, UChicago would prefer Essay to be about 500 words, do you want all these three essays to be about 500 words? So I should probably lengthen the Question 1 and 2, and shorten the Essay questions?
Oh, and I have a question regarding my ACT scores. I have composite 33, but 27 on English, 31 on Reading while I have 36 on both Math and Science. (Well, yes, I am planning to major in Physics at UChicago). Would you recommend me to take ACT again to improve English and Reading? Would you think that the 27 and 31 will have a critical influence on my decision? What I want to know is, whether UChicago put much more emphasis on Composite scores or Individual scores. Thank you!

Essay length: our suggested length for our extended essay is 500 words, or 1 page single/2 pages double spaced. Please try to stay near there, but know that a little over (or under) is fine. Giving examples of how over-is-over would cause the essay length conversation to never end, so just try to stick near that guideline. It is perfectly appropriate if your other supplement essays (such as “Why Chicago”) are less than 500 words.

Music supplement: we suggest that students submit a music supplement if they believe their music represents either a significant talent that they would like to share or something they plan on participating in at the college level. It is by no means necessary to submit a music supplement (or any other supplement beyond our required Common App supplement). Electronic music would be appropriate.

I am not able to comment on how we would evaluate specific portions of a student’s application. Please know that standardized test scores are but one portion of everything we look at. If you feel that you have achieved your best when you have taken a particular test and don’t wish to take it again, then that’s just fine! If you feel that you could achieve higher and wish to try again, that’s fine too-- it all comes down to your personal understanding of your skills and how you feel they are reflected by your scores.

Oops, neglected some questions from the past page!

3boys-- please see my comment above on scores.

amishphotoclub-- this is something you would select with ACT when you decide to submit your scores to particular colleges. Schools will have varied preferences, but know that UChicago does ‘superscore’ and considers the highest combined and subsection scores that you have achieved as your ultimate score.

dannymanny-- this is not a figure that we separate out from our regular pool of admitted students. We encourage students who see UChicago as a top choice and are Questbridge finalists to apply through the QuestBridge early match program; we have partnered with the QuesBridge match since 2007. You can learn more about our application process for QuestBridge finalists here; if you have more specific questions, our QB coordinator Audrey Habermann’s contact information is also at this site: https://collegeadmissions.uchicago.edu/apply/applicants/questbridge.shtml

isyemky-- so long as you have not attended another college or university, you may apply as an early-action applicant. We ask that students who have had any interruption in their schooling (including a gap between high school graduation and potential college matriculation) to fill out a small additional essay called “not attending explanation” on the Common Application. There, you will give us a description of why you have chosen to take time between graduation from high school and college matriculation, and explain what you have done in that time frame outside of being enrolled in school.

can recommendations be from 2 teachers of the same subject area like 2 science or 1 math and science? or is that not recommended…
