Hi Grace, I think my question about the supplemental rec. was sandwiched in and amongst all the ones about essay length.

Whoops, have a tiny question to add to my previous post
I’m assuming it’d be fine to respond to the second question in a non-traditional format? I was considering a free verse poem, though I don’t know if that would be frowned upon. Additionally, whether or not a brief prose explanation following a poem would weaken it at all.

Hi. How should we format the description of the activities on the common app? What would be a good format of listing additional extracurriculars in the additional info section? Thanks.

My daughter’s test scores and letters of recommendation were sent to Chicago in mid-September. She got the common ap submitted about a week ago; has yet to finish the supplement. When she goes to her application status page, there is no mention of recommendations or test scores. Should they show up there? Does it take a long time for this?

mamabear and others: we are just beginning to process the thousands of pieces of material we receive in our office as part of many students’ applications; when we have processed a student’s material, it will be reflected as received in their UChicago Account, but please do not worry or re-send material if it is not yet reflected as received, as it has likely arrived but just not been processed yet. Rest assured that we will contact students whose documents are truly missing after we have processed all of our received materials.

sunshinerocks, you are welcome to attach an additional letter of explanation detailing any circumstances you find difficult to explain in your aid application. We do guarantee to meet 100% of demonstrated need for all accepted students-- we would not accept a student and then not provide the aid our aid office determines they would need in order to attend.

astoria-- please provide us with your prompt at the top of your essay if you are submitting an essay on a prompt you wrote yourself.

cegorach, it is perfectly fine to discuss topics of great importance to you in your essays; I cannot give specific guidance as to your essay particularly but if you feel that the subject is discussed gracefully and appropriately then you are welcome to submit it. I am not able to discuss ways in which particular situations may affect any student’s likelihood of acceptance but, as previously discussed with other applicants, you are welcome to submit a piece of additional information detailing these circumstances if you feel it would help us better consider your application.

On non-traditional formats: it is fine to respond to any of our questions in a non-traditional essay format. However, style can never make up for substance-- please do not feel the need to submit an essay in a non-traditional format just for the sake of doing so, but do feel comfortable doing so if you feel that your essay is reflective of yourself and your ideas.

bailey2812-- for some reason I am not finding your question-- if you ask it again I will be happy to respond this time! :)

ccuser95, please follow Common App instructions for the Activities section-- provide a name for the activities you participate in, how frequently you participate, and a brief description of the activity. You may submit a brief piece of additional information about other activities or an expanded description of activities that may not fit in to the section if you need to, but most students find that their activities are easily able to fit in the Common App space provided.

I was wondering if I may submit an evaluation from non credit college class that I took over the summer as part of the supplemental recommendation?

Hi Grace,
I uploaded a few files to my Portfolio on my UChicago Account yesterday, but it seems I can no longer upload anything else to my portfolio. Is this a glitch in the system, or should I upload additional portfolio material to the same place as the supplements?

I had taken my SAT in July 2012 and I want to apply ED to UChicago. If I send my SAT score through collegeboard on the 30th of October, does this mean that my application can not be considered since it takes 1 week for UChicago to receive the scores?

Hi,

Do you accept ACT instead of SAT or are we required to send in both test scores?
Thanks!

I just submitted CSS profiles for custodial and noncustodial parent. On my UChicago account it says:

Required Financial Aid Non Custodial Parent Information

So do i fill that out even though i just submitted a CSS profile for both parents or will that required thing go away after my CSS profile is received. And if i do fill it out when it asks for my mother and father’s name would i only input the name of the noncustodial parent (father) and not put anything under mother?

Hi

I was about to submit my supplements today but then stumbled across this post and wanted to make sure I had answered the essay questions correctly.
My Why U Chic / Favorite Things essays are between 250 - 500 words. However, for the extended essay, I read that it should be between 1-2 pages and thus wrote mine accordingly. It’s currently just under two pages at 1400 words which appeared to be too long… did I misinterpret the 1-2 page guideline?! I could re-edit it before submitting to make it more appropriate, though I’m a little confused as to the approximate word limit and would appreciate some clarification regarding this.

Also, is it okay to have used an extended essay prompt from a previous academic year? (I indicated that I selected my own topic then just pasted the relevant prompt at the top of the page, including the year it was used).

Final question: - sorry! - as an international student, if I submit my supplements and my Common App to U Chicago on, for example, Tuesday October 30th or Wednesday October 31st, would there be any problems in creating the U Chic account and ensuring everything arrives on time?

Thank you so much! :)

Hello!
I submitted my CSS and mailed my 2011 tax returns approximately 2 weeks ago. I understand that there is probably a backlog in the offices at the moment, but I was just wondering whether or not the status of financial aid documents will appear under my UChicago account? (That is, shown that the documents have been received along with application materials such as the common app and supplement)

Hi guys, I spoke to you (as in UChicago) before about my age (26) and my hesitation to apply because of it. You guys reassured me that it would be no problem if I had all my credentials in order, but I noticed that the application requires 2 letters of recommendation from former teachers. I went to an independent high school in a small town where 2 teachers taught every class. Considering my age, this is going on nearly a decade since they’ve last seen me. My transcript reflects that I’m a great student, but I met with the teacher recently, and while she is a gracious and kind woman, it’s apparent that her memory of me is a bit fuzzy. She indicated this and I thought it would be a bit much to ask for a glowing recommendation from a teacher that hasn’t been around my classwork in nearly 10 years.

Would letters of recommendations from employers/mentors be acceptable? I have worked for a paper, and I plan on applying to an English program, so I believe the editor of that publication has the ability to highlight my strengths in that department. Would this be acceptable?

How is Hurricane Sandy going to affect the application deadline (if at all)?

Is there a certain order that admissions officers read the essays? If so, what is this order?

Hi Grace,
I have similar question as Collegecrazy’s. My daughter was about to submit her supplements today but I wanted to make sure she had answered the essay questions correctly. For the extended essay, she understood that it should be between 1-2 pages and thus wrote her’s one and half page. When I check it, although it is under two pages, I counted up to 958 words. Is it too long, what is the exact 1-2 page guideline?

Also for teacher’s evaluations: she has one from sicence, one from Math. Dose she need high school counselor write one too?

Thanks

Hi Grace,

I also have the same question as tarmiriel.
A lot of us east-coasters will be faced with the chance of losing power in the next few days.
Would UChicago take this into consideration and maybe extend the early action deadline by a few days?

Thanks,
storminwashingtondc

@collegecrazy:) @sherryzhou

From previous threads/comments I read that they will read everything. However, I think the 1-2 page limit is this. 1 page limit single space. 2 page limit double space. My essay personally fit in 2 page double space and was about 780 words for the extended essay.

Hi Grace,

Earlier I saw a mention of a cover letter and/or relevant Common App form with an additional letter or recommendation. Where should I get this, and what exactly is it? I gave him (research mentor) an envelope and I believe he was just planning to mail out his letter as is, tomorrow or Tuesday. Any light shed on this would be wonderful. thanks.

Please Note:

Due to the effects of Hurricane Sandy we are extending the Early Action deadline past November 1st. We ask that you complete your application at some point during the week of November 5th. All application materials are expected to be submitted by 5 p.m. Central Time on Friday, November 9th.
