Hi Grace,
I know it’s fairly late, but I almost finished an additional letter after my deferral in early action because I restarted the letter multiple times. If the letter is sent during next week, before Feb 15th, could it still be reviewed by the admission officers? Also, as far as I know, uploading the letter online is not permitted so students should sent it directly to the admission office. It would be very appreciated if you could confirm it. Thanks very much.

Hi, I was deferred in the early process wanted to ask to whom I would send an additional letter of interest. I am a student from South Korea and there seems to be five international admissions officers listed on the Uchicago website!

Also, I wanted to upload some recent achievements on the UChicago portfolio and it seems like I cannot upload anymore because I have already upload two files when I applied last November. What should I do in this case?

Thanks alot!

Also, I am a deferred student and since early admissions I have received a supplementary recommendation. Could I submit this now through the portfolio?
Thanks alot!

classycolleges, you are not technically obligated to withdraw other applications, but once a student submits their enrollment deposit we assume that they are committed to attending UChicago, and should notify us promply if they decide otherwise.

tokidoki, my apologies if you never heard a response from your admissions counselor; these notes and letters are always processed, but sometimes a reply can be lost in the email shuffle. Rest assured that we have received your update and placed it in your file for consideration.

ajd, historically we have accepted about 10% of deferred students and can anticipate that that this year’s acceptance rate for deferred students will not differ significantly.

Hi Hoosier54, thanks for considering UChicago; I’d encourage you to check out our transfer process information here: https://collegeadmissions.uchicago.edu/apply/applicants/transfer/
I am not able to give any student’s likelihood of acceptance, but we do request to see a high school transcript with your application for transfer, and will evaluate it alongside your college work. Please also note that we do not have an undergraduate major in business, but that our economics program could be an appropriate alternative for a student interested in finance.

katzly, our apologies! No need to worry, but sometimes the account generation email gets caught in a spam filter in some email clients. Email collegeadmissions@uchicago.edu and let us know that you have not received your UChicago account information yet, and we will resend the email.

writingchkk, no need to worry! We still would love to receive a midyear transcript for you, but these are a less urgent need for admitted students than for students currently in the application process. Just send it along when it is possible to do so. Please do plan to send a midyear report and a final grade report.

momof3sons, the student is welcome to submit financial aid documents after our deadline-- no need to worry. We guarantee to meet 100% of demonstrated need for domestic students at any time during our process; while a late financial aid document may cause the student’s aid package to arrive to them after they receive an admissions decision, if admitted, it would not affect their eligibility for aid or the amount of aid they would receive.

fortheluvofprada, our aid office is still working to process FAFSA forms and tax returns recently submitted by students and parents. It could be a few weeks before everything currently in our office is reflected as received, but this does not put any student as a disadvantage for aid purposes-- it simply takes us some time to process all of the material submitted. No need to worry, though-- they will contact you if you have indicated you are applying for aid and any aid material is missing by the time they have everything they have received processed.

injustice, you may certainly still submit a note. You are welcome to upload it directly to your UChicago Account or to email it directly to your regional counselor.

starsyk, please go ahead and email your letter and recent achievements to internationaladmissions@uchicago.edu; the email address is checked by all of our international admissions counselors and it will wind up in the right hands!
We would prefer that your additional recommendation letter be submitted by the recommender directly, but they are also welcome to email the letter in to our office (same address as noted above).

Hi, does U Chicago send Likely letter?

Hi, my D just found a silly mistake in her common application’s short answer. It was happen when she use her Mac computer load her document. She felt bad and would like to know how to correct it. Thanks. G

Hi,

I was wondering if there is a deadline to submit any remaining supplemental materials, such as creative writing samples. I will try to do everything possible to get it in before February 15th.

Overall, is it okay to send a submission this late in the game? Would the submission be frowned upon/not really make a difference, or would it only be beneficial? I have heard speculation that it could be seen as either positive or negative.

Thank You for the help!

genetics11, we do send a very small number of likely letters to outstanding applicants and athletes in our regular decision round. The vast majority of our RD admitted students will not receive a likely letter, so there is no need to worry if you do not receive one.

It is not necessary for your daughter to correct a small mistake like a typo or misplaced comma (we totally understand that these things sometimes happen!), but if she feels particularly strongly about doing so, she may email her regional admissions counselor.

ccnewbie, you are welcome to submit supplemental material if you wish to, but please don’t worry that you HAVE to; if you feel that your creative writing sample or other material is particularly impactful and shows us a side of you that we may not otherwise be able to see, feel free to upload it, but please don’t feel a need to send a large volume of material or material that does not represent a strong passion for you in your life. The majority of our admitted students are accepted on the strength of their required admissions materials alone.

Hi! Thank you so much for doing this. I have a two questions…

Are you allowed to apply EA to Chicago and ED somewhere else? If so, would this affect one’s chances at Chicago?

How does activism look in an application? I do participate in more mainstream politics (and am very interested in doing so later in my life–intended major would be political science), for example, I am interning for my state senator this summer and have interned for a national congressional campaign. However, I spend a lot of time with grassroots activism, especially with regards to the LGBTQ community. My group has lobbied (successfully!) for marriage equality at the state level, organized substantial public awareness actions on different issues, and continues to work very closely with the main center for LGBTQ homeless youth in our city (I have been the point person in speaking with the leaders at this center). Aside from this group, I have spent time with various anti-war and anti-hunger coalitions and intend to join my chapter of ACT UP this summer.
Because this sort of activism takes up a lot of my time outside of school, I have come to consider it a kind of “volunteering” for the community because I don’t do much volunteer work aside from activism. How would the admissions office at Chicago view this?

Hi! Sorry, I have one more question…

If I write and perform a significant amount of slam poetry, should I include a piece? No poem is particularly long (never more than two pages), and it is a large part of my life. Also, is it relevant to note that I have routinely received high scores at the slam place I attend (the longest running slam place in the world)? If I were to win a slam there would that be worth noting?

Thanks!

hi, calculator5, I’ll just do your three questions in points–

Yes, you are allowed to apply to UChicago EA and another school ED. However, you will sign an ED agreement when you apply to your ED school stating that you will promptly notify any other schools where you may have outstanding application that you have committed to your ED school and wish to withdraw your application if/when you hear of your ED acceptance. We expect students with ED commitments to withdraw their applications promptly, even if you have not yet heard a decision from us.

Social and political activism sounds like a big passion for you, and we would certainly consider it an extracurricular activity. You’re welcome to let us know about all of the activism that you do, leadership roles you have taken, and presentations you have made either through a resume or on your Common Application activities section.

You are welcome to submit a favorite or best example piece of your slam poetry as a supplement to your application. If you have received official placement in any poetry competitions you are also welcome to let us know of that, too.

Hi!

For submitting supplemental materials like writing samples, was there a deadline of Jan. 15th? I would feel hesitant/afraid to make a submission if there was a posted deadline that is already long gone. I was not aware that there was a deadline
It’s taken me some time to realize that I was able to submit additional materials.

Thank you for your help in this issue and for helping all the people on this form, it really helps!

Hello. I want to know whether UChicago offers fee waiver for international students with family’s income lower than 75k/year. Tks!

Hello! I have a question regarding Midyear grades. I have had As in all my classes through high school, except for a C+ in BC Calculus and a B+ in AP Chemistry in my first semester of senior year. I’ve had to deal with a lot of family stress and tragedy this semester, and it manifested into some bad test anxiety, which I’ve never had before. If I believe these extenuating circumstances heavily contributed to my poor performance and do not reflect my academic efforts fully, should I write, or have my counselor write, a letter explaining the situation and vouching for me/ability to improve? My counselor feels I should wait until admissions contacts him regarding the anomaly on my academic record, but I’m not so sure about that approach. Sorry if this sounds a bit stressed! I promise I’m not all obsessed with grades :P

Hi Grace,
Was wondering, do you read the deferred applicants files all over again? Or do you review the salient points plus any additional info. Also, by when would you be reviewing them, end of feb? Thanks

Dear Grace,

I am a deferred applicant and I personally sent over the supplementary recommendation because my professor had given the file for me to send over with additional comments and affirmations of mine.

Would that be okay or should I ask him to send it over once again?

Thank you.

Hi ccnewb, we did hope to have supplements by the 15th of January, but you still may upload or email additional materials if you feel they will be necessary for us to review.

linhdan, yes, we also offer fee waivers to international students; you may contact internationaladmissions@uchicago.edu indicating your interest in a fee waiver at the time that you submit your application.

nycprospie, this depends on whether or not you are an admitted student; if you have been admitted, you may wait for us to contact you if we have any questions. If you are a deferred or regular decision applicant, we would not reach out to you regarding this midyear report, and so please do feel free to send a short explanation of your circumstances that we may consider.

ajd, yes, we do review deferred students’ files again, including original materials and updates. We’d encourage you to send updates before the end of February if you have not already done so.

starsky, this is fine; while we prefer if recommenders submit the recs directly, if it has already been sent, it is not necessary to ask your professor to submit it again.

Hey Grace,

I was just wondering how much the interviews “count” towards admissions. Some have told me that they hold little weight at UChicago whereas others said that they are as important as the teacher recommendations. Mine was definitely not the best. How much would an “average” or “bad” interview evaluation hurt?

Thanks in advance.

Hello

My school sets a limit on the number of classes you can take online and put on your transcript. I am taking multiple aps online that my school does not offer but only one of them will be placed on my transcript. I was wondering if you can report online courses that are not placed on your high school transcript on your application and let it be factored into your gpa? Are only certain courses from certain online providers accepted or are all classes and providers good?

Thanks
