UChicago Questions? Ask an admissions counselor!

Dear Grace,

I have applied as an RD applicant. My application status shows “Processing of application materials is now complete”.

How can it be complete? I mean, the Jan SAT scores are released only a few hours ago. Does this mean UChicago didn’t consider these scores?

chlory, interviews are not a required portion of our admissions process, but can be a useful time for us to get to know more about an applicant, or for an applicant to get to know more about us. An exceptional interview can be quite helpful, but an “average” or just “ok” interview is not going to be a problem, so no need to worry; certainly an interview that goes quite poorly (say, you run the interviewer over with your car or light his office on fire afterward-- this is the category of “bad” that we’re talking about when we say “bad”) may harm your application, but other than that, interviews just have differing degrees of helpful, not harmful.

kwkingdom, you may let us know of your additional coursework by providing an update of the courses taken online and the grades received in the “additional information” section of the Common Application. If you have the ability to send some type of document from the online course service (or even a screenshot of your course lists and grades received), that would be preferred.

hopingforbetter, this means that we have received and processed all required materials for your application. We will continue to add updates such as January SAT scores if they arrive to us, but we do not need you to submit any additional documents for your application to be considered complete.

Hi Grace,
I am an international applicant and as you have said I have sent my recent updates to internationaladmissions@uchicago.edu. I know it’s normal that I don’t receive replies, but last time, a month ago, I sent in question emails about some inquires that I had and I never received replies to those. Those question emails are no longer important but what I was a little worried about is whether the update emails were well received. Is there any way I could know?

Hello, I am a transfer applicant.
I have been preparing my application only via commonapp.org
Should I have an account on the University of Chicago website also?
I also have submitted all the school forms by mail.
Would it affect review process of my application?
Thank you.

Hi, I’m an RD applicant to the class of 2017 that stated that I was applying for financial aid while I was applying. However, as of now, my parents decided against filing for aid. On my prospects UChicago account it says that the three financial aid forms were not received. Would this impact my decision that I did not get the financial aid documents in? Because as of now, I’m not seeking aid. Thanks.

Hi Grace,

As a deferred applicant, I have a couple general questions concerning the process.

In what stage of the regular action cycle are deferred applicants reviewed? Has it already begun?

Can I send in a letter to my regional admissions counselor expressing enduring interest at this time?

starsyk, my apologies that you did not receive a reply. The past several weeks were very busy for us and it is possible that something was overlooked. Please feel free to re-send your questions to the account, as activity has slowed and I am sure they will respond to your question.

2013transfer, we will create an account for you with our website once your Common Application materials have been filed, and will email you the information for how to access it-- no need to worry on that front, it is not something you will or need to have access to right now.

nihilism, if you are a domestic student/permanent resident, asking for aid will not impact your admissions decision, so you can feel free to go ahead and ignore the request for aid-related forms. You can email the aid office at college-aid@uchicago.edu if you wish for the form requirements to be removed from your account. If you are an international student who no longer wishes to apply for aid, let us know by email at internationaladmissions@uchicago.edu.

karatekid, we do wait until most students have submitted their midyear reports before reading deferred students’ applications. You may still feel free to send in an update or letter of continued interest; we will evaluate these whenever they are submitted, but do keep in mind that we try to have admissions decisions finalized and announced before the end of March, so sending between now and early March would be helpful.

Is it possible to send in an explanation for poor midyear grades? (Family/personal issues)
Thanks UChicago!

Would an undergraduate at UChicago have access to sufficiently high level Chinese language courses to study Chinese (in addition to another major) every semester for 4 years if he entered college having passed the HSK level 5 exam? (Advanced High level ACTFL)

I’m a high school junior and I was wondering what you thought my chances would be of getting accepted EA. I have an unweighted gpa if 3.95 and a weighted gpa of 4.33. I’m in the top 10% of my class(based on unweighted gpa). I got a 208 on my PSAT and a 95 on the asvap. I have taken the only two French classes my school offered, and right now I’m in advanced chemistry, American history, trig/pre calculus, biology 2, advanced English for college credit, advanced physics for college credit, and a studyhall. Next year i will have advanced chemistry 2, health occupations(a 2-hr block college class at the hospital), calculus for college credit, advanced english for college credit, economics, world history, and advanced art for college credit. I’ve had straight a’s since I was in diapers. I’m a member of the national honor society, 4-h, and I’m involved in lots of academic activities including knowledge bowl and first robotics, as well as the Teams engineering program.

^not the right place to ask I think.

johnhawkes, if you feel that we will need additional information to be able to consider your grades more thoughtfully, please feel free to email us at collegeadmissions@uchicago.edu or email your regional counselor directly.

apollo6, we offer many courses in Chinese at the intermediate and advanced level; if you were to place out of or go beyond coursework in the language itself, you would be eligible to take literature or history courses taught in Chinese. I’d contact the East Asian Languages department if you have further questions: [Contact EALC - East Asian Languages & Civilizations | The University of Chicago](http://ealc.uchicago.edu/contact.shtml)

Hi Alexzandra, I am not able to estimate any student’s likelihood of admission to UChicago.

Thank you for your response. My son will look into it further.

really great to see a Top Shelf School willing to answer questions here.

Thanks for replying UChicago!
I recently became aware that a school is asking for a third quarter update (I applied RD and did have quite a big dip in my 1st semester grades) If from Chicago, is this request a good thing? I am doing better in all classes but one.

Hello johnhawkes, we do not ask for third-quarter updates from students (only midyear and final reports) so any motives I might guess at for the school who is requesting one would be speculative at best. Sorry I can’t be of assistance with this one!

Also, thanks for the nice notes, everyone! We’re always happy to answer questions here-- we figure if people are going to ask questions about UChicago on CollegeConfidential, we ought to be around to answer them.

@UChicago how applicable is the statement to uchicago - ‘where fun goes to die’? like if ur a student then like is there like anything to do or do u have to like study all the time?

When I am doing financial aid applications and they ask if my mom has filed a IRS tax return.
do i put yes? she did her taxes but idk if thats her irs tax RETURN.

thanks

When will UChicago release RD results? How will you release it? On-line, e-mail or mail?

Also, do UChicago send out likely letters? What percentage of RD admits will receive these letters?

louiejuni, sounds like a yes, is your mother unsure?
