UChicago Questions? Ask an admissions counselor!

Exactly. I could handle the rejection. I’ve been through terrible things already. What hurts the most is seeing your parents, who have so little, wanting the very best for you and trying to give you everything can. It burns. I’m in such a low place right now.

Didn’t get off either. Pretty bummed but it is nice to finally just know. McGill Class of 2017, would’ve been nice to be UChicago but regardless of where we end up, I’m sure we’ll all do well. Im curious as to how many people did get off. Anyone have a stat on that? lynnhope et al. please view this imgur, it will make you slightly less sad. http://i.imgur.com/h06o4yv.gif

Even though I sent in many letters and paper voicing my passion for UChicago, I got rejected. It’s truly a sick and awful feeling. At least Northwestern University, will have a great asset for the Class of 2017.

Lynnhope: This is the second time I’ve posted in response to a comment from an applicant denied from the waitlist. While my heart breaks a little at how disappointed you are, I am also filled with hope for the future of our Nation and our world populated by courageous, smart, ambitious, yet sensitive persons such as yourself.

@Lynnhope, I second the comment above mine. I am a transfer applicant who was not granted admission; my heart breaks with you. But, please know that you are not alone and that we can do this.

@kaukauna, I’m going to write your post on a post-it and pin it above my desk. I really needed to read that right now. :)

Rejected. Here’s what I did: picked up some books from the Core (sister went to UofC, gave me old copies), read one to get a sense of UofC from a student’s perspective and emailed my thoughts… along with sending three letters of interest over several weeks. sob D:

I plan on applying to both. Which school is more selective in Computer Science?
I know the university of Chicago’s rank is 8 in the world but I’m Looking for real good Science :slight_smile: thanks

What, like for undergrad? The world rank of 8 is for Grad possibly and really outdated. The comp sci department at the college is small and not up to date. Like the curriculum uses really old programs and languages that are no longer being used. Read the course descriptions and ask yourself if you recognize any of the languages, it’s more of a theoretical exercise than an actual learning of something useful in the workforce half the time.

UChicago is more selective to get into as a college and there’s not a huge difference in intended major because you don’t apply to a major you apply to a college, but just because Northwestern is easier to get into don’t think it’s worse.

The most recent us news comp sci grad rankings has UChiacago at 35th, not 8th fyi.

@LearningLover
He was probably alluding to Chicago’s overall world rank, which indeed is 8 according to the QS rankings (and fairly close to 8 according to both ARWU and THE).

UChicago’s Comp Sci department is small, but well regarded from what I’ve heard. I’ve also heard that the program is extremely theoretical and is basically complexity theory with few classes focusing on the applied aspect of computer science.

Here is their catalog:

[Computer Science - University of Chicago Catalog](Computer Science < University of Chicago Catalog)

UChicago is major blind (applying with any particular major in mind doesn’t affect your chances) while Northwestern has a separate college of engineering (McCormick) which is a bit more selective than the university as a whole, but your chances at either colleges would be similar (if slightly lower at Chicago).

Why not wait and see which of the two you get into. There may not be a choice at all.

UChicago, will I get my admissions offer rescinded for a D- in one course? The rest of my second semester senior year grades are As and Bs. The thing is, I stupidly missed the deadline for one assignment, and since we’ve only had a few graded assignments, my grade dropped overnight from a B to a D-. I’ve tried everything - talked to my counselor, my teacher etc. but my teacher won’t accept late work.

@UChicago College rep

for those who accepted your wait list offer, when will you inform them about the admission decison?

^surely if you accepted the waitlist offer then that means you’re in?

accepting position on waitlist != accepting position off waitlist

cc2468, I would encourage you to speak with your regional counselor if you expect that you will receive a D- in your course.

sm24100, at this point, all students have been notified as to whether or not we will be able to admit them off of the waiting list. You may check your UChicago account to view your update personally.

@UChicago College Rep
thank you for your response. the U Chicago account still says that “you on the waiting list”. What can I do to find out the final decision?

@UChicago College Rep
please note this for a transfer application

Grace – I just found this thread and have been reading through it for two days. Thanks so much for taking the time to answer all these questions.

I have a sophomore D (class of '15) who is very interested in the undergrad program; we have scheduled a U Chicago visit this summer in late June. We will most likely not be able to visit again before she applies (flying out from CA for this trip), and it seems like it’s too early for an interview and class visits.

Is there anything you can recommend we do besides the guided tour?

@UChicago

Are psychology, computer science, and economics considered core subjects?

And what about AP Art History and AP Music Theory?

@UChicago

I was told that essay questions last year were released on June 1st. When will essay questions be released this year ?

sm24100, my apologies. We hope to communicate to transfer students on the waiting list within the next few weeks, but I am not certain when this will occur; please wait for an email from our transfer student coordinator, Mary Hetlage.

mamabear16, excellent that you’ll be coming to visit! Yes, unfortunately, it will not be possible for her to interview while she is visiting, and classes will not be in session at that time. But, Hyde Park can be fun to explore, as well as downtown Chicago. There are many small neighborhood restaurants that can be a great spot for lunch if you’re visiting --I personally really like the Medici on 57th st-- it is a sort of campus haunt and a good, air conditioned place for a casual sit down lunch in the summer. The Museum of Science and Industry is about a 15-minute walk from campus and is quite fun to visit. In addition to this, there are a few free museums on campus, including the Smart Museum of Art and the Oriental Institute Museum, that can be fun to check out and are open during the summer; both bookstores, the Seminary Coop Bookstore (this is where you buy books) and the Barnes and Noble bookstore (this is where you buy sweatshirts) are always worth a visit, too. Hope you have a great trip!

kwkingdom, if you are asking about these subjects for the purpose of teacher recommendations, we think upper-level courses where you have written a paper, done a problem set, or done lab work are excellent options and can be considered Core subjects. Not knowing the structure of the courses taught at your school, if you have not done that kind of work for any of your mentioned classes, it is fine to submit a recommendation from a teacher in that area as your 3rd, optional recommendation, and select teachers from math, science, English, or history courses for your two required recommendations.

writingchkkk, sssh, it will be a surprise! :slight_smile: We do hope to have our essay questions announced sometime before the Common App is released on August 1, to give you a little time to start thinking about the prompts.
