UChicago Questions? Ask an admissions counselor!

Thanks Grace!

SaraSic, I’d encourage you to be in touch with our international team about this, the best way to reach them is internationaladmissions@uchicago.edu.

I was unaware that financial aid materials were due before February if you were submitting Early Action. If I submit my css profile today, will I be ineligible for financial aid?

I applied Early Action and needed financial aid. I did not know that materials were due in November. Can I still apply for it? Otherwise my family could not afford the school, am I still required to attend?

Just wondering, do you think UChicago decisions will be sent out before Christmas break (21st)?

That’s my eighteenth birthday ;)

CodeNameVerity and YujiLi, we are able to accept financial aid materials from domestic students at any time during our admissions process and still guarantee to meet 100% of demonstrated need regardless of when they arrive. Our deadlines for domestic students exist to ensure that, should you be admitted, you will be able to receive your aid package at the same time (or very near the time) that you receive your admissions decision.

Deadlines for international students are a bit more strict, because we do need to consider student’s request of aid at the time we make our admissions decisions in our need-aware international admissions process. Email internationaladmissions@uchicago.edu if you have any questions about deadlines or particular situations as an international student seeking aid.

Dannyo95, we’re doing our best to finalize admissions decisions as soon as we can, but don’t have a set date of release yet-- I’ll post here once we know the date.

Grace, I just want to thank you and let you know that we all really appreciate what you’re doing here. I know that our questions are extremely repetitive (mostly revolving around “when will we know our decisions???!?!!”), which can get rather annoying, so please realize that we’re just a bunch of stressed teenagers and that we’re all lucky to have someone like you answering our questions here.

hello grace! is it bad if my uncommon essay isn’t directly about me?

Hi hi!
Would I be disadvantaged applying as a junior? (family reasons etc)

Hi Grace!

1.If a student has short stories published through national competitions, and there is no title award for any winners, where is the best place to put those information in? Under honor, activities, or additional information? If under honor, should the student claim as national honor? (The honor and activities have very limited space though).
2.Where is the best place to put in summer activities? In additional information area?
3. If a student has been taking private painting, piano, and vocal lessons but never went to competition, should the student notes these learning experiences in additional information area? Is the student still allowed to submit supplemental material for these kind of works, though never went for competition?
4. Is presidential service award an honor to put under honor area or should it be noted with the volunteer services?

Thank you very much for your clarification in advance!

Hi Grace,

I was wondering what grades factor into the accumulative GPA for a transfer student. My senior year of high school I participated in a dual-enrollment program at University of Colorado. I then returned to CU after a year and a half in China and took another semester there. I know that UChicago doesn’t accept credits earned through dual-enrollment, so my question is: does UC take my GPA as my university would send it to you(inclusive of dual-enrollment classes) or would you recalculate the GPA excluding the dual-enrollment classes?

Thank you in advance.

brbrbr, it’s totally fine if your uncommon essay isn’t directly about you-- it can be topical, creative, a personal reflection, anything you think is a strong reflection of your writing and relates to the prompt.

5oviet, the best preparation for UChicago’s rigor and social environment is spending all 4 years in high school; we do strongly suggest that students apply during their senior/4th year in high school.

truepassion, any of the things you mentioned are appropriate to place in any of the spaces you mentioned, really-- just feel free to note them where you think they fit best, we have no strong preference here. You’re welcome to note things that you have done or submit supplemental material even if you have not won any competitions in those areas.

wudaokor, we do not recalculate GPA as part of our admissions process so we will simply want to see all transcripts received from the institutions you’ve attended. In our process we focus on viewing individual grades on the transcript in context, so GPA is much less significant a factor than the transcript itself.

Thanks for the reply, I really appreciate it!
However, due to some external reasons it would be best for me to apply, even so does that place me at a significant disadvantage?

Hi Grace, thank you very much for your helpful tips!

If say a student started volunteering at the end of 10th grade (age limitation), and the schedule is thereafter weekly including breaks, what is the right way to present this information under activities? To claim 10th grade as starting point seems overstating, but to claim starting point as 11th grade seems unfair as well since it missed the last couple of weeks of 10th grade plus the whole summer…

A lot of posting commented either way would be fine as long as it wouldn’t exceed total hours. However, under the activities, it only ask how many hours per week, and how many weeks per year. Where to indicate total hours?

Thanks again for your feedback!

Hi!
I am a first-year applicant intended to apply for financial aid. I am aware that UChicago is need-blind for Canadian citizens and does the same policy apply for Canadian permanent citizens as well? Thank you.

I meant “permanent residents”, sorry about that one…

truepassion, you may state that this activity started in 10th grade, that’s fine. There is no space on the Common Application for cumulative hours, so provide your best estimate as to how many hours per week are spent on the activity on average.

czydude, Canadian permanent residents are considered international students for financial aid purposes, so your application would be considered on a need-aware basis.

I am so worried now
