Although this is for UChicago in particular, I know alot of colleges that also have similar supplement questions. The one for UChicago is "Share with us a few of your favorite books, poems, authors, films, plays, pieces of music, musicians, performers, paintings, artists, blogs, magazines, or newspapers. Feel free to touch on one, some, or all of the categories listed, or add a category of your own." If I wanted to share a couple of my favorite musicians, do you think I should limit them to those that are appropriate? For example, I love rap and hip hop and I want to put down artists like Childish Gambino, Kid Cudi, Tupac, Immortal Technique, etc. But, I know that these artists have very suggestive/provocative or inappropriate lyrics. do you think this will change how they see me? I also want to talk about artists like Pink Floyd and stuff-which I know are more respected.

Interesting question

I don’t know but I hear: “Don’t write what you think admissions people want to hear” a lot. Maybe it would make you different from all the other applications? Worth considering at least.

I would say mention them - don’t present a false image of yourself by writing about music/musicians you don’t actually like. Rap artists exist because there is a demand and/or appreciation of it, and I’m sure UChicago adcoms realize this.
