In previous discussions threads touching on UChicago C.S. I had made the point that I was optimistic about the program because of, a) C.S. affinity to and reliance on Math, where UChicago has always been strong, b) a tangible movement to invest involving upgrades to facilities and a new dean from Berkeley, c) that UChicago is a logical place geographically to build an elite C.S. program in the middle of the country between the coasts (West - Stanford / Berkeley, East - MIT / CMU), and d) UChicago does not really have any mediocre programs (relatively speaking), and that the University would not tolerate a very significant field today to continue to appear to be weak.
The award of these Siebel scholarships is not conclusive of course, but I think it is significant in that it is the first time that UChicago students who are in programs which are exclusively or mostly C.S. getting the awards and not Booth. These scholarships typically go to students in the very top programs (MIT, CMU, Stanford, etc).
