Two women who couldn’t get academic advisers at Chicago in the 60s and 70s, because they were women, are now being awarded degrees. Marilyn Webb asked two different highly respected professors; both demanded sexual services in exchange for being her dissertation advisor. When Cheryl Dembe’s advisor died, no one would take her on because she was female.,

Nice, happy ending. But gosh, what a horrible story!
@“Cardinal Fang” , thanks for posting.
I wonder how many more women, during those times, who were in this similar situation.
Glad that it ended well for these two ladies.
Yuck! That is just disgusting. That was completely unacceptable even in the '60’s. I wouldn’t say it ended well, but at least their ordeal is over.
It’s an ongoing issue, though the aggressors are usually more subtle about it these days.
Female graduate students at several universities, including Columbia and UCLA, have accused professors of sexually assaulting or harassing them over the last couple of years. Almost without exception, the universities have been slow to act.
Abuses of power, including (but not limited to) sexual harassment, are not uncommon in PhD programs. Little wonder that so many PhD students have mental health issues.
