UChicago v Cal v Cornell

Did you read my message @hello1212hello ?

Uchicago parents? Alumni?

I imagine if you have a a kid at UChicago or are an alumnus yourself, that would work.

Can you fly to uchicago? Maybe someone can donate you some frequent flier miles.

Have you visited UChicago yet? The UChicago life of the mind/quirky reputation goes way back – they used to be not very highly ranked because honestly it wasn’t something students or administration cared about. When my D2 was looking at it, my dad said, “That is a school for eggheads!” – then gave D2 an appraising look and said, 'But she might fit in just fine." Historically they have not been a school with much school spirit, and rigorous academics carry the day there. Lately with a new admissions director, a move to the Common App, and a push to catch Yale in the rankings, they have been accepting students that look more like the traditional Ivy candidates, and less the “life of the mind” types. But note that an awful lot of the tenured faculty are still there, and they set the academic tone and pace to a large extent. There are party dorms at UChicago (my kid had an overnight in Max, and her her hosts had a full bar worth of liquor in their room, and ditched her because she didn’t want to go out drinking with them at accepted student days). So if you want to party, there are people there who do some of it. But the academic intensity and stress are real there, too, especially in STEM subjects.

It does seem that you are waffling too much about this. Go to Cal.

20 years ago, UChicago really was the place where fun went to die. The administration finally caught on, and started to change things. They improved the dorms and the food and spend money on social life and they changed admissions policies to attract more well-rounded students.

Now UChicago freshmen are rated the second most content bunch bunch in the nation, just behind Yale and just ahead of traditional “happy but academically elite” schools like Princeton, Amherst and Stanford.

@Redtor Almost everybody you are taught from at UChicago is faculty. The classes are much smaller. I cba to refute the rest of your claims.
In recent years, there has been a huge push for computer science faculty. They got $50million last year(?) and another $20.5 million last week to hire new professors and open undergraduate paid research openings. The comp sci dept. there today is not the comp sci dept. there 4 years ago.

This thread is littered with unsubstantiated claims or wrong information. Choose based on what you think is your best fit.
I was really scared of what uchicago is and the excessive life of the mind but after visiting I saw so many people who go party every night and my host said he did ~6 hours of total work(including class time) a day and the rest he spent talking with other people and doing extracurriculars.
