Hello everyone! I’m a prospective math major and I’m wondering which school you guys think I should choose, UChicago or Columbia. UChicago is well established as one of the very best schools for math, but I’m drawn by Columbia’s (in my opinion) more prestigious name and New York City (I also love Chicago). Please let me know your thoughts about math at each school and which school you think I’ll have a better experience at/get more from in general. Thanks.
If you want to study pure math, UChicago hands down. Otherwise Columbia is a good option too (Not that Columbia is bad in math, but comparatively, UChicago is better)
UChicago for math is a no-brainer, look at their history. Enough said. Columbia is a great univ too but for math and economics, UChicago is a whole another level way above every single ivy and every other great univ you can possibly think of.
Another thing to consider is that I may also want to take up a second degree (major or minor) in Economics, Political Science, or Computer Science, and I’ll probably go into industry, not academia.
I’d get into both, then decide.
You asked about darthmouth vs penn on another thread. Unless you got into all these universities dont worry about it.
Its like someone asking what they should do with the lottery money when they didnt even win.
I picked Chicago over Columbia, and am studying Math/CS. Feel free to PM.
It depends on what you want to do with your math degree. If u want to go into academia U could choose Chicago due to its very intense focus on academics and the sheer quality of its math department. If you wanna go into industry Penn or Columbia are better choices. Personally I wouldn’t choose Dartmouth over Penn,Columbia or Chicago no matter what.
The problem with getting into both and deciding after that is that some schools have first-come, first-serve housing so it’s better to decide certain hypotheticals before receiving decisions so you can swiftly enroll and get good housing. Freshman housing is very competitive at UChicago and slightly less competitive at Columbia. I’m just trying to pass my time as I worry about getting in, that’s all. Thanks for your help everyone. I don’t know yet if I want to go into academia or industry so that’s part of the problem with my decision.
