I recently got into these two universities and I am trying to choose which one to attend next year.
My intended major would be Economics

At USC, I received a full tuition scholarship which UChicago would be around 45K per year after financial aid.
Should I go to the school that would be almost free or is UChicago the better option because of its stronger economics program? Is UChicago worth 45K per year?

What are UChicago econ classes like? Is it possible to maintain a high GPA at UChicago? Are students competitive or are they more willing to collaborate?

Ok, this is really lame. But in the end choose whatever will make you happy. I know 45k is a lot but if that is where you believe will be best for you go ahead! And if the thought if not owing half of a home after graduation will be less stressful and let you enjoy college then I don’t see why not.

University of Southern California, hands down.
Even if you had the 45k a year to spare, no college is worth nearly an extra 200k especially when you have a full ride to another top university.

UChicago is definitely worth the extra cost, but it comes down to whether your family can actually afford it. If you’re going to have to take out loans/debt then I’d pick USC. Otherwise, you’re investing in an education and an experience that is available at very few universities.

^You guys really think that UChicago is worth nearly $200, 000 more than USC???
What on earth is your rationale?
OP, if the cost literally is not a problem for your family (and you’d have a hard time convincing me that $200, 000 is chump change for anyone), then go to whichever one you like more. However, no matter what your family income is, it is my honest opinion that UChicago is not worth 200k more. I’m a UChicago student, btw.
Plus, you’ll have sunny Cali weather and won’t have winters that last about 6 months

If the 45k is not going to place huge financial burden, then consider both options. If not, then USC is the clear choice. After all, the “quality of the school” affects your future (and USC is still a very good school), but IMO one’s personal drive and qualities are mostly responsible for one’s future.

Go to USC, its a great school and your less likely to be killed if you walk off campus in addition there aren’t snow storms and the students don’t have a “I want to kill myself” attitude 24 hours a day.

Don’t let (incorrect) stereotypes keep you from choosing the better school. This seems more like a financial decision than anything else. And if you do end up going to USC, don’t major in econ because its a waste of time unless its quantitative, which at the undergraduate level is only at top schools because kids at less competitive schools can’t handle the math behind it.

I agree with what other posters have said in terms of 200k being a big chunk of money and the educational experiences probably not being different enough to justify paying that much more. Unless UChicago is your absolute dream school and not going there would make you unhappy I can’t see many reasons to justify the price difference. Are you considering going into academia after undergrad? or are you leaning towards a more pre-professional career? These may be things worth considering as UChicago will likely boost your chances in academia more than it would in more practical fields.
