UCI class sizes

How big are the typical class sizes? I heard some of the GE classes are big (hundreds of students).

There are some bigger lecture classes, but keep in mind that these are always combined with smaller, “discussion” sections, which can be as small as 10 or less. However, they are usually around 20-30 students.

Some stats:
The average class size is 31 and the student faculty ration is 19:1

my bio lecture had around 400 students :/

it really depends on the type of class. for example, art classes are usually 15-30 depending on if it’s beginner, advanced, etc. it could also depend on the amount of resources available (ex: photo is limited to 15 because there are only 15 enlargers)

discussion sections (if things like attendance count) are maybe 30-ish, but they can go up to 80+ if it’s not mandatory and your enrollment doesn’t affect your grade (or if you don’t have to enroll in both lecture and section to be enrolled in the class)

writing is 15-25 (depends on the type)

big lecture halls can be 100, 350, 400, etc. (depending on the building size)

if you want any specific numbers you can use this to see our current schedule of classes

Seminars are in general smaller.
Lectures are huge, a few hundred people. Discussion are about 25-35 people who work with a TA over that week’s material.
