UCLA/BERKELEY major question? Should I not do psych? HELPPP!!!

Hi everyone, here's my story.

I went to UCR this fall straight out of high school. I was miserable, I hated it there and decided pretty much right away that I was going to go back to community college and transfer to UCB or UCLA (what I wanted orginally anyways).

So due to this, I was kind of lazy, I got a 3.148. It's not bad, but still average. This spring at community I pulled a 3.75 and I am taking one (or two if necessary) summer classes to try and pull it up before I apply.

I can reasonably get a 4.0 in fall too, and I'm taking major specific stuff and I work 40 plus hours a week with three jobs.

My question is, with those factors, should I try and switch my major for application? I love love love psychology and I want to be a therapist but I REALLY want to go to Berkeley or LA.

Would these majors be reasonably close to psych requirements as far as grad school goes?

-Social Welfare
- Development Studies
- Gender Studies (I want to specialize in therapy with rape victims, sexual abuse victims, and am very interested in human sexuality)
- Media Studies (This would just be something else I'm interested in)
- Linguistics and Psychology
- Communication Studies (just as impacted, I think)

I'm sorry this is incredibly long but I am SO desperate for help.

If you want to get into a psych program, you HAVE to be a psych major. So… you want to go to a school with a good name… instead of choosing a subject and a career that you ABSOLUTELY LOVE?

Sounds like a roadmap to regret later on in life to me. Why go to the school with the big name if you’re going to get an empty degree and get a career that’s not the one you want

Oh sorry, just to clarify,

I can go to a graduate psych program in any major as long as i meet their requirements., and to get into a good psych program, you have to go to a good school, etc.

And I do like all those majors as well, and as a psych major I have less of a chance to even get into a psych program because I’m competing against all the other psych majors

In my opinion i think the Gender Studies Degree would fit best for going into grad school for psychology. But make sure you get into grad school because if you don’t go to grad school, i think you’d be kinda screwed with just a BA in Gender Studies lol.

Or maybe i’m wrong? Nonetheless do whichever course you’d love to learn and whichever one you can get in.

@b0bthebuilder, you’re very correct in both those points =]

I’m in the same dilemma as you… I want to do psych but since it’s so impacted I’ve considered switching. Everyone I have talked to has said it isn’t worth it to get accepted into a great school if I have a random major/degree. Also if you were able to take 2 classes in summer and a full load in fall (those grades count) and get a 4.0 with all the pre-reqs done you’d be competitive. You would just have to write stellar essays and explain your grades from UCR.

Sorry about my grammer/spelling I’m using my phone.

if your planning to transfer to UCLA as a psych major i say take the chance but also keep your other options open, but luckily UCLA doesnt have many prereqs for transfering in as a Psych major. For example when I was looking for what major to pick I noticed I had all my prereqs for UCLA already mainly because a majority of them are gen ed. classes. so it doesnt hurt to apply there and as long you have a TAP with a strong GPA, community service, etc you should be okay and have no problems getting in. You can still have what you want=]

thanks everyone!!

Yeah, UCLA Psych is what I’m trying to transfer to, I’ve gotten like a D every semester but I always make it up into a B or an A and mostly on classes that aren’t going to transfer to the UC level. I fix the grades up and have a decent GPA (and I’m gonna take honors classes) and I’m apparantly competititve enough so… you should be fine ^^
