UCLA Engineering Q&A

Disclaimer: I am not reponsible for anyone staying an engineer, and subsequently having regrets once the cruel upper-division courses roll around and it's too late to turn back. It's not like I know what your grades are.

lol everything sounds interesting, thats the problem

How depressing... So basically if I want a somewhat social college life I should switch out of engineering?

in addition to the question above, are all of the engineering majors this rigorous or is mainly the electrical, computer science, and chemical?

Going through this thread, I am honestly scared ****less (for lack of a better term). I applied and chose EE as my major, and got accepted to UCLA. However, I cannot decide between UCLA or UCSD. And after going through this thread, I'm considering changing major. But I'm not sure which field would be right for me, and I am unable to attend the Engineering Orientation on the 15th due to personal reasons. I'm also bummed out to read that those who go into Engineering sacrifice a social life...

so not true!!!

your new social life is tau beta pi ;)

Consider yourself already weeded out. Have fun in Political Science.

Having a social life and being an engineer isn't that hard..

That answer is comforting, but a lot of other engineering students seem to say otherwise

I agree with MadeInChina
but I guess it depends on how social you are and how efficiently you study

I apologize for saying what I said last night at 3:00 AM. I was dead tired and not thinking straight.

haha no worries, your thread has been very helpful and your input is appreciated

Out of curiosity...what would a typical Engineering Student's daily routine consist of/look like?

it really depends on your quarter and the classes you take and the day of the week

last quarter i had like this

tuesday
8am to 5pm - class
5pm to 9pm - nap
9pm to 2am - food, hwk, study, waste time
~230 sleep

wednesday
10am to 4pm - class
4pm to 8pm - food, hwk, study etc
8pm to 2am - work
3 am - sleep

thursday
LAUNDRY DAY AND HWK

friday
10am to 4pm - class
4pm on - whatever

mondays were exactly like wednesdays.

I have been admitted to Chemical Engineering for fall 2007. I wonder if I can change major to Bioengineering before school start. How difficult to change major to BioEngineering and What's the procedure? Your input is appreciated.

Go to lectures for 4-6 hours... then go to on-campus clubs/activities for 2-4 hours... then study/do homework for 4-6 hours... then sleep for 6-8 hours. It's actually applicable to most South Campus majors, not just engineering.

You have to talk to your Orientation counselor at Orientation, and you may have to go to HSSEAS OASA during the beginning of the school year to apply for an immediate change of major once you can find time for it. I wouldn't get your hopes up about changing majors into Bioengineering, though.

What is OASA?

Office of Academic and Student Affairs (6426 Boelter Hall).

Flopsy, thanks for your reply.
Have anyone changed major to Bioengineering within the engineering school?

I know Bioengineering program in UCLA is very new. How is the Bioengineering program when comparing with UCSD?
