UCLA Engineering Q&A

always use first pass on labs because they usually fill up fast and don't have a big waitlist or a waitlist at all since materials are limited.

and i don't think you need to use your first pass on cs33 (if you don't have a specific time you need to sign up for)

You can choose three courses for your first pass, since Physics 4AL is 2 units. I recommend CS 33, Physics 1B and Physics 4AL.

yea i thought i would have been able to get three classes, but it turns out cs 33 is 5 units and physics 1b is also 5 units, so I can't fit in three for 10 units :(

thanks for the replies btw :)

yeah it seems like a waste to sign up for Physics 4AL and Physics 1B since you have 3 units wasted. But don't make the same mistake I did!

Signing up for classes in the morning. Some advice would be great.

I'm thinking about signing up for these classes:
CS101 (Seminar)
EE2
EE102
EE110
CSM152A (Lab)

Total units: 15

How difficult would this courseload be (1-10, 10 being death)?
Is taking EE2 and 102 at the same time okay?

hehe cuz people would be up at this time to reply...

flopsy: how's 174A with terzopoulos? I went for the first week and it wasn't that interesting...

not helpful grark...

I want to take CS 101 this quarter, but I have schedule conflicts for either the seminar or discussion.

So, can I go through this class with just going to either seminar or discussion? If so, which one should I go to?
And this class a final exam? What's on it?

hmm so even though theres only 150 spots you think i'll be okay for cs 33?

yes, rohr is usually pretty generous with PTE numbers and should let you in if it's full.

how generous is smallberg with pte numbers?

Has anyone taken the new nanotech TBA? I'm deciding between nanotech & technology management for this next quarter... it's a tough decision since I like the idea of both.

Last year for 31, as long as there was enough seats in the room, you can get in (same policy as some or most professors).

He'll make an announcement during break of 1st lecture.

how hard is it to get off the waitlist for physics labs?

4BL is easy, and very easy in the summer. But during the year, unless you're the first 2 slots for waitlist, you probably won't get in.

Usually people don't drop 4AL, but 4BL, people will.

9/10

Prof. Terzopolous is one of the better CS professors. His midterm exam was all multiple-choice and very reasonable. Unfortunately he usually arrives late to lecture and his TA has to partially cover for him.

k i ended up changing up my schedule a lot.

flopsy: have you ever had eggert? how was the experience? should all CS/CSE students take the opportunity of having the eggert experience? thanks.

flopsy do cs/cse students typically follow the schedule given to them by the engineering school? and if they dont which classes are the ones that are usually swapped/moved around?

^ just take whatever you feel like...as long as you finish the classes that are pre-reqs for most classes, it doesn't matter when you take them. i'd guess that you just need to get math and CS out of the way (i don't imagine you'll need much chemistry or physics...), and then you can take whatever else whenever you need to/feel like it.

take a look at the course catalog, look through the first few upper-divs you'll be taking and what their pre-reqs are, and make sure you take those first.
