UCLA Engineering Q&A

I never spoke with my faculty advisor...

AIChE puts on its own career fair for Chemical engineers. We have companies ranging from BP, Chevron, Shell, Procter and Gamble, Baxter and much more come down.

The ChemE department has its own "Career Counselor" aka "Liason to Faculty". Bill Beard or known as Mr. Beard, was the recruiter for Arco (now known as BP). Mr. Beard is a godsend.

Job prospects varies for chemical engineers. From what I can tell, everybody (senior class) has an internship or job offer. Most don't go onto graduate school unless MBA because the money is so good upon entry and advancement into positions are so possible.

I will retract my statement about how much the average ChemE makes I posted a while back. The average I gave was lower than what it is now. It's possible to make ~$75k a year with ChemE.

is civil engineering a really competitive major in ucla?

I don't know any Bioengineering majors who are going into or have gone into business school, so I wouldn't know. However, I think business schools tend to put much greater emphasis on your work experience than your school, especially if you're in an engineering major.

It's less competitive than EE/CS/CSE, so no...

About half of the freshmen who start out as UCLA Civil Engineering majors give up on the major. This is according to the Professor who teaches the "Intro to Civil Eng" course. That is a pretty high drop-out rate, so it looks to me like the CE major is quite competitive.

flopsy, where are you gettng your ranking #s from? Is there a complete list avaialble somewhere?

Hmmm, UCLA is not even on the list for mechanical...is it the stepchild of the engineering dept?

flopsy, are there any CS classes after CS 32 (besides CS 33) that are even harder?

No, we're (ChemE) the redheaded stepchildren that get tossed around. Our department according to ABET was accredited in 1980s? UCSB and UCDavis were accredited earlier and hence the higher ranking. There's a DuPont facility in Goleta, curse UCSB for jacking a major recruiter from us.

Fun little info:
Our senior design project is to make biodiesel plant. If you didn't know, biodiesels are made from fats, so people were tossing ideas around.

Professor: "Mcdonalds, KFC, In-n-Out, get the oil from there."
Student: "Let's go to a lipsuction clinic."
Professor: "Ewh, that's so nasty!" (Coming from an old and very masculine Canadian who loves hunting, very ironic)

assuming that you're including upperdivision courses, then yes. most of them are harder (since CS31-33 are introductory courses)

just got done with my last hw and project for cs 32 :)

i was wondering, how many of the rest of the cs classes have weekly projects like cs 31 and 32? do they have fewer projects that are just bigger or about the same pace

i think most, if not all, of the CS courses have homework/projects due every one or two weeks.

i'm currently taking CS35L and we have a lab/hw every week. and for CS131, i believe there is homework every week and one big project. and for CS111, there are probably about 4 labs (one every 2 weeks) along with additional hw assignments.

also, i'm a CSE major so i don't know about the other CS upperdivs. hope that helps!

CS 111, CS 132, CS M152B

Eco-boat powered by human fat attempts round the world speed record

Demonstrating further commitment to the cause, Bethune underwent liposuction and donated enough to produce 100ml of biofuel, while two other, larger volunteers also had the procedure, making a total of 10 litres of human fat.
...
This in turn produced seven litres of biofuel, which could help the boat travel about 15km.

god, imagine someone saying that to vasilios

If someone said that to Vasilios, the situation would be like what happened to me. As another student sums it nicely about how Cohen commented on my presentation about Reverse Osmosis (RO), "You got ROwned."

flopsy, do you know the differences in courseload between the engineering in UCSD and UCLA?

wooo I'm pretty sure I got an A in CS 31.
