@m3csl1994: The admin spends money on political causes? Can you give some examples? I know the ASUC has spent student’s money doing the same but I didn’t know the admins have.

I’m not sure about spending money, but the admin certainly devotes university resources and energy (ie, time, focus, etc) to political causes. Birgeneau, for instance, has sent several campuswide emails that advocate for the DREAM Act.

I haven’t really seen the admin spending money on political causes let alone anything else. There’s a reason why half of the vending machines are still completely empty.

uh, maybe it’s not?

The money Cal spends on it’s graduate programs is probably what UCLA would spend if so much of its money didn’t go towards its med school. Cal’s operating budget for 2011 was about 2 billion; UCLA’s was nearly 5 billion

both of these statement are from UCLA’s and Berkeley’s respective websites and are both from 2010/11. (although UCLA’s talking about ‘last year’ which was presumably '09) I’m not sure how much Cal spends on instruction, but i assume it’s higher than what UCLA does.

Lastly, I’ve never really understood why anyone cares about how many top graduate programs a school has. Most people probably only major in one thing, so i don’t see why the rest would matter. If i’m majoring in biology at UCSD, i never understood why anyone cares how good it is in like philosophy for example

Actually, the highest paid employee in the University of California system is none other than Cal’s Jeff Tedford.
