UCLA IBanking/Consulting/PE

Hi all! I'm a recent freshman admit to the class of 2018 at UCLA with my current major set at Pre-Business Economics. Before I address my question, I'd just like to say that I KNOW that in terms of jobs with IB, Consulting and PE you're much better off with a top-tier east coast school. Sadly - and rather shockingly - I was rejected/waitlisted at every Ivy and comparable tier school.

Everything I've read has said that you can count on your fingers the number of individuals who get NYC bank offers from UCLA while most recruiting is for LA and SF offices. Nevertheless I'm determined to make the best of UCLA if I end up going there and work at a NYC firm sometime soon! With that here is my question:

I know that top level financial firms are less concerned with your major than your actual GPA and your overall intellect. With that being said, would I be in a better position for these sort of jobs with the Business Economics major or the Mathematics/Economics major? I enjoy math and economics both VERY thoroughly, I'm just somewhat unsure.

Thanks in advance to all who reply!

Getting solid consulting experience as an undergrad would help. If you do end up going to UCLA, you should definitely look into Bruin Consulting:

Worst case scenario, you work for a while, get an MBA, and then land a NYC job.

Math/Econ with an accounting minor is very doable these days.

Also, shooting for jobs just in NYC, at least immediately after college, cuts down your options a ton. would suggest against that

Oh, of course. I don’t intend just to shoot for jobs in NYC. It’s simply a city whose environment I love and would enjoy working in - especially after visiting this past summer. I absolutely will seek employment in the LA and SF area as well since they’re great places with equally great opportunities.
