UCLA/Ithaca/Clemson/Washington/UNC/Miami/Alabama/Michigan

I like the town of Ithaca - many don’t. It has good food. Theres bars and off campus parties if thats what you’re into. I think theres a good sense of community. Theres applefest and chili fest which are fun. It gets cold and gloomy and it can be depressing until the sun comes back out.

I’ve liked all of my professors at IC. One thing I hate about it is the internship that is mandatory to complete (for my major) and they charge you for it. I can’t complete it during the semester, so am being charged to do it over the summer (6 credits) and they aren’t providing the internship. There are some great opportunities for work experience.

The mall sucks here. But Syracuse is an hour away and has a great mall and basketball team. There are also many unique stores on the commons and in other areas and many wineries (though I hear the locally made beer sucks - but I hate beer so wouldn’t know).

Ithaca is very beautiful and great for touring nature, hiking, etc. Again I love it here but can see why many might not.

I go to Alabama at the moment and agree with Manhattan–Tuscaloosa has a LOT to be desired. There is very little to do that you couldn’t do at any other place, and the city is pretty much non-drivable. Most of the people are either good ole boys or rednecks and are unfriendly. I’m not sure what your major is, but unless it’s business or engineering, the academics here are unremarkable.

Hate to be a debbie downer, but I want to help people avoid the same mistake I did.

The rest of the schools you listed are all pretty decent, so it’s ultimately up to you. If it were me choosing, I would go to UNC or UCLA.

I’m also from SoCal and currently going to Washington. If you’re a sports fan Washington is as good as it gets. there is nothing like a football game at husky stadium or a basketball game inside hec ed. the games are fun, the fans are passionate, and it’s a thrilling atmosphere.

@Cuse0507, thanks for the input. (: UNC is definitely one of my tops, but I was worried about them only caring about basketball.

@Diontechristmas, yeah, the weather at Miami wasn’t anything to rave about for me. It’s like that all the time here.

@SOad, thanks. (: I love nature and things to the sort (reason why I’m not completely sold on UCLA yet), so Ithaca seemed appealing to me.

@ABR1190, wow thanks. I’m visiting in two weeks and actually was ready to eliminate them from my list, but my parents want me to look at it first before I turn down a full tuition scholarship. How is the honors housing (if you are in it?) and the food?

@spaceneedle, I love Seattle. And probably the best thing Washington has that other schools don’t is a baseball team. And while I am a hardcore Angels fan, Safeco Field is dropdead gorgeous, and Chone Figgins is one of my two favorite players of all time. And as a USC fan, I know just how loud it can get at Husky Stadium. (:

Go to Michigan, it’s awesome and all the kids there love it!

It comes down to the money, but what have you heard that people like who go there?

California resident here; one daughter at Washington. She’s had a great time there, but hates the rain. Youngest going to Michigan in the fall. She has visited twice and she is blown away by how enthusiastic the kids are about Michigan. Even though the weather will be a challenge, she’s excited to live some where it is something that 68 degrees 90% of the time.

You’ve got some great choices! Good luck!

Historically UCLA is better than UNC. You’re right. But the Pac10 was a joke this year and UCLA isn’t very good, although they are on their way up. NC will still be better at least for another year or two.

UNC cares a ton about football. Pretty much every game has sold out for the past 2 years. Heck, our spring game is even being featured on ESPN this year. UNC’s football atmosphere is great; I have more fun at football games than I do basketball games.

@mythreedd, are the budget cuts severe in Washington right now? And how close are they to downtown? And how nice is Ann Arbor?

@Cuse0507, thanks, again. You may not, but do you know of people who go to other games ie baseball, gymnastics if you have it, etc?

The honors housing is actually pretty awesome. I really like having my own room and almost my own bathroom, as I kind of like privacy. The downside to the honors dorms, though, is that it really is private–it seems like most people keep to their own rooms, at least in my dorm. So, it really depends on what you’d want in a dorm.

The food is okay. The cafeteria food was okay at first, but I pretty much can’t eat there anymore cuz I just got sick of it lol. We do have a chick-fil-a and burger king inside the Student Union, which I’m pretty much living off of now.

Okay, thanks. (: Yeah, I’m visiting in two weeks, but taking a tour, those are probably the two aspects that I won’t experience/witness.

I regularly attend baseball games, and know plenty of people who go to lacrosse and men’s and women’s soccer games. All of these programs are highly successful (baseball has regularly advanced to the college world series in Omaha, men’s soccer has been to the NCAA final four for two years in a row, and the women’s soccer program has nearly 30 NCAA national championships to their credit, including last year’s). UNC really is a great sports school.

Go to Clemson!
We have a great sports atmosphere but yet are a relatively medium sized school.

@Cuse0507, WOW. Thanks for eliminating my main concern with UNC (besides money). Haha, you have officially made my decision harder.

@Pierre0913, I am heavily considering it. How is Clemson and its surrounding area? And do you know if I can join the honors program after I start and how long I have to wait? I didn’t finish the application even though my stats probably would gotten me in because at the time it was my ultimate safety. But now I kind of want to go there and regret that decision…

You can apply to be in the honors college after every semester provided that you have a 3.5 GPA. You can still apply for Clemson! The deadline is May 1st. (though that would probably mean you would have to send a deposit somewhere first before you would find out your decision). If you are a city person, you’ll probably hate Clemson as it’s in a small town. However, if you are an outdoors person, there is a lot of opportunity for hiking, biking, sailing etc… Also, the campus and surrounding area is really beautiful (right now they’re doing construction to landscape the center of campus so it looks awful but that finishes in May!). I love it here. Feel free to ask if you have any questions!

I can still apply to the honors program?

I like the city, but I love nature also. I like to work out and be outside, but I like to shop and dine out, etc.

UNC is gorgeous! But it feels like a big school with all of the graduate students and the campus is spread out. Still, it’s my favorite. Clemson has the same feel with a more compact and still gorgeous campus. And Clemson school spirit is like nothing I have ever seen, even at UNC. Weather is great at both and there are very many happy students at both. You will be a bigger fish in a smaller pond at Clemson if that is of interest to you. Visit both if you can and you will fall in love with at least one. Both offer your classic college experience.

Aww, you’re not coming to Michigan ='(

you cannot apply for honors for the fall semester but if you get at least a 3.5 GPA first semester, you can apply to get into honors spring semester
