Hi guys. I'm a student at UCLA, I transferred from cc and owe a lot to these forum pages! I am working on a research project. I'm an anthropology major and am writing an urban narrative for my Urban Anthropology class. I was wondering why you guys chose to attend UCLA or why you want to attend UCLA. Any information would be much appreciated! Thank you!

Lol well my answer is pretty generic. I want to go to UCLA for the film program. I know there are other ones around like USC and stuff, but I always wanted to go to UCLA because it was part of the UC system which always seemed familiar since high school. There seemed to be more outreach programs and more resources on them. I think the appeal to UCLA over USC (in regards to film) was that it is a public school, so I IMAGINE its not so bias when choosing people like I heard USC is. I always hear about kids who got into USC because their parents knew a guy etc. or they just have enough money to throw at USC. At UCLA I know more about people getting in with humble beginnings and as a film major, I would rather surround myself with people like that because my origins are similar. (first generation college kid, first generation American, immigrant parents, etc.) I would easily pick UCLA over any UC for my film major and for my parents to be able to brag about me back home xD

Of course, I don’t attend UCLA (…yet, lol) so all of this is just based off of my observations and what I’ve been told.
Hope this helps?

@clamfest: Thanks for taking the time! Besides UCLA’s film program, is there any thing about LA itself that attracts you to UCLA? Such as close proximity to firms/studios that are in the film industry, internships? To give you an idea of what exactly I’m doing, I’m trying to figure out why UCLA students chose UCLA instead of other campuses, something that the urban environment can offer, such as future employment etc. Thanks again clam, hope you get in!

Definitely the location. I’ve visited it before and it’s really nice. The surrounding area as well. I know it’s close to studios and the like. I also like that it’s away from central LA. I also happen to know that european football teams use UCLA’s facilities to train in the summer for some mini tournaments here. I’m a big fan of football(soccer) so that is definitely a cool perk. UCLA is really close to universal city where studios like warner bros and universal are. Those are my top choices for studios to work for. It’s a strategic location in my opinion for what I want to work in and for who I want to work for.
It would be easier to be in UCLA and then arrange travel to studios for various internships and what not, than at other UC campuses. Like Irvine is near Anaheim which is relatively close to the studios when compared to schools like Berkeley and UCSC.
I was at UCSC my freshmen year and realized it would be a LOT easier to find internships and work if I already placed myself in socal.

@ clamfest: Very nice! UCLA actually does offer internships with Warner Bros studios through school, along with others like Universal, Nickolodeon and E entertainment. Also, NBC, FOX, and KTLA are also just around the corner. I was actually going to do an internship for either Disney-ABC-Television-Group or A&E for a market analysts position this summer but since there is a class for my minor being offered this summer(1st prereq in a series of 3 classes), I have to take class instead. =[

Oh that sucks
but try for another one later on!!
I’m so jealous of all those opportunities because I don’t attend UCLA haha. BUT there is a chance, because I researched into it and UCLA offers summer courses for junior and senior film students. Along with those summer session courses, they offer internships as well, and can help people with that. I’m looking to attend next summer. If anything, it can help for my film school app to UCLA for grad school xD

@clam: Well there ya go =]. Yeah, I only need to take 1 class next Spring before graduation so I’m hoping to do a Spring internship then. Next summer I’m hoping to attend the business program at the Haas business school at Berkeley, it’s designed for non-business majors. A Berkeley transcript to add to my resume? Yes please! lol.

Wow! Sounds cool! Good luck, man! That would totally beef up your resume!

I want to go to UCLA because it’s in LA and I want to get my BA and a good education. I am still torn between UCLA, UCSB, and UCI.

I am going to UCLA becuase it is in a great location, has a well know name and academics, and good sports teams.

@ Elebzz: Thanks for your reply! What is your major if you don’t mind me asking? Do you feel that UCLA’s environment and LA’s environment in general gives you a strategic standpoint in terms of careers/internships?

bump please! =]
