UCLA -> UChicago

Hello,

I have a very interesting one. I'm considering transferring to UChicago to be with my girlfriend. I went into UCLA honors out of high school (got into all UC) and I attended one quarter, but I took leave and went to community college for two quarters during the financial crisis. I'm just starting again at UCLA, and UChicago doesn't accept community college transfer credits (unlike UCLA), so I'll basically be two quarters behind. I think my stats are good enough to get me in, what do you guys think?

HSGPA: 4.4-4.5 at VERY hard school, ranked high honors (most others went to IV, Cal, or here)
ACT: 34
SAT: 2120
SAT2: 750 Bio, 780 Math
UCLA GPA: 3.5 first quarter, will be going up 3.7-3.8 because classes are easy this quarter.
Community College GPA (don't think it matters): 4.0
Extra Curricular: Ironman triathlete, work in commercial real estate, played 3 varsity sports in HS, and a bunch of insignificant stuff.

UCLA major: mathematics economics
Want to transfer into UChigs math with econ specialization (my gf is in that too haha)

I'll make up a better reason than my GF for my application haha. Oh and she'll make sure my essays are UChig quality

And I need to figure out where to get a fatass $50k loan to pay for the difference!!! GAAHH

STOP. RIGHT THERE. (Yes, in the name of “love”)

The only reason you’re transferring is for your girlfriend?

Don’t do it. It’s a bad reason to go to any school.

Have you seen his GF?

Very funny, but how will he feel if he hates U of C and breaks up with his girlfriend? I guess he’ll have all his loan documents to keep him warm.

Joking aside, a romantic relationship is a terrible reason to transfer. If you love econ U of C style, that may be a reason, but I have to warn you: you are going to be up against some brilliant minds that are a big step ahead of you in learning how to suceed at U of C.

Well I would like to go there for the education as well, it’s one of the best economics programs in the world! I would have applied there out of high school but my family didn’t think private school was economically feasible.

And I don’t think Chicago is any harder than UCLA for math… I don’t know if you’ve heard how difficult the program is here. I’ve seen some of my girlfriends honors calc problems, and they’re not anywhere near as difficult as UCLA regular math.

Anyway, the question was “will I get in?”

you seem like an outstanding student…however this thread is useless without pix!

^^^LMAO.

It’s cool if you’re going there for a great econ program and not her. I’d probably try to pull the college gpa up a bit.

haha yea I would too but I don’t think there is a math major with higher than a 3.6 here. that gpa is close to a 4.0 on a non-top-tier-UC curve.

I agree with what everyone else says too, you DEF SHOULD NOT go there because of your girlfriend. But UChicago does have a great great econ program…

UChicago doesn’t accept community college units to transfer over?
I guess I’m not applying there anymore…lol
