UCLA vs BYU

UCLA played Utah last year.

Anyways, I had lots to say about the game, but it's a little old and I'll keep it short. First, UCLA's recruiting class in the KD era is a little overrated. They had lots of talent coming in, but not depth. They just sold a lot of people to come to UCLA, "best talent available" and are now in bad shape on the depth chart for some positions (esp. O-line).

Just many mistakes. Forbath kicking the ball too low .. lost his composure on the 2nd one too. The OL was terrible, getting pushed and hardly throwing any forward contact. The RB situation is very bad. Playing Moline the glacier? Moline is a short yardage back, maybe goal line or 3rd down back, but not a starting back. A terrible OL + Moline is a 1-3 yard rush every down.

I'd like to see them play Franklin or Dean, but Dean is still learning the system and has fumble problems. He has trouble reading plays too, but he has good talent soon.

UCLA will have problems defending the spread again next week against Willie T and Arizona. They won't be as good, but it's hard to stop the air attack with undersized defensive backs. They are good in pursuit and okay in coverage, but size is going to create mismatches. UCLA defense plays well in the pro-style defense. It's hard to find schools who can defend multiple systems very well.

Overall, I think UCLA is a year to two away from being a Top 25 threat. They have a great QB coming in next year, solid receiving corp, solid D which needs time. I kind of hoped Terence Austin would get stronger and bigger to become a threat (he was a 4 star, I think top 10 in his class).

Also wish that Craft would get more comfortable quick and RN can play less conservative so a long ball would get thrown more often .. instead of the so often slants, screens, short yardage dumps. If only the OL can play better to open up the running game ....

Next week should be a better game. Last thing ... UCLA needs to play more aggressively next week. Better pass rush, put some pressure on the QB please.
