I have a son who is facing a dilemma, NU or UCLA.
We are from the SF Bay area so California is all he knows. He is not deterred by the weather in Chicago either. In fact, he found Chicago to be a vibrant place with many young people.
He has a college fund so money is not part of the decision.
However, will NU open more doors for better startup jobs? He is planning to study Industrial Engineering with an emphasis in Finance. Will NU open more doors in consulting or IB jobs than UCLA?
How do you feel now after one year AT UCLA?
He is planning to attend Bruin day on 4/13 and also intends to go to NU on 4/19 for a second time.
Note: I have posted this in an old thread from 2018 that was closed, so any relevant feedback is welcome.
Hands down, go to Northwestern. Far higher-ranked Engineering program and Kellogg is a perennial Top-5 business school where he would be taking his finance classes. Don’t worry about the weather. He’ll be having so much fun he won’t even notice it.
@jototo
It will open more doors if he’s driven and takes advantage of the programs at NU. For a IEMS major with interest in finance, one should definitely check out the Kellogg certificate program in financial management. The core courses are at graduate level.
IMHO…attending NU will not only expand his job opportunities upon graduation, but also offer him a chance to live in a very different environs. DD attended NU over UCLA. In visiting both, she found the intellectual caliber of the student body higher at NU. Both are great schools, and if money is not the determining factor, then maybe these other elements can dictate his decision. (We lived in the Bay Area-DD went onto work in DC-then Law School at NYU-and is now clerking for a Federal Judge in DC)
