UCLA vs UNC

Hi! I’m currently deciding between UCLA and UNC and would love any information on either. I think I am leaning towards UCLA because I think the overall vibe fits me better but I’m still unsure. I am out of state for both and plan on majoring in global studies at both (I was admitted as an IDS at UCLA and might major in that instead). I was admitted into honors Carolina for UNC, which has definitely been a pull for me in terms of smaller class sizes and the other perks. I don’t know much about the global studies majors at either college and would love any information on both majors (like the resources at both and possibly which is a better program). Also, just any input on the colleges overall would be great.

Thanks!

I gather you don’t qualify for need based aid at all…because UNC meets full need for all, while UCLA doesn’t give a nickel of need based aid to OOS students.

I think location might be your deciding factor. Do you want to live in L.A. or would you prefer the Raleigh Durham area. Cost of living in NC is also less than in L.A. That might be a consideration if you decide to love off campus.

If you are flying…the RD Airport is much easier to deal with than LAX.

But really both are excellent universities, so congratulations!

Have you looked at the curricula?

Something to consider: where do you want to work after graduation? West coast, east coast, does it matter? Might be easier to find internships, jobs going to one college over the other based on geographical location.

Chapel Hill is your quintessential college town, 81% students are from NC, more conservative than UCLA, less diversity, smaller student body.

UCLA, much more diverse, in a large city, Westwood isn’t really a college town, per se., so much to do beach, mountains, desert, lakes it has it all, but much more crowded than UNC. Everyone I know that has attended UCLA say the food / food choices are exceptional.

The last point is UCLA, like most of the UCs, is overcrowded. You need to be a self-starter to thrive in that environment.

Good luck, you have two excellent choices. No wrong decision…
