Hello Community,

I was accepted into the HP at uconn for BME and I was wondering what any current students thought of it. How does it compare to other programs such as that of UMich or UVA?

Thanks!

I was accepted into the HP at uconn for BME and I was wondering what any current students thought of it. How does it compare to other programs such as that of UMich or UVA?

I can’t tell you how it compares to UMich or UVA since I know nothing of those school’s programs.

BME requires work, nothing impossible, but you have to actually do stuff. Second semester of Freshman year all the engineers take ENGR 1166 unique to their major, and from what I’ve heard from the other majors it’s a joke except for BME. I just got an email yesterday on the curriculum changes they’re making, and it definitely seems like its going to be a little harder than I had it.

I liked how the BME courses were taught. They made it very easy to do well as long as you put the work in. You have hw due monday, and tues the solutions are put online. On friday you have a quiz almost directly taken from a homework problem. So as long as you review the solutions you will know how to solve the problem. Exams are a similar format, they’re based on homework questions. This was how John Enderle taught and I think even though he no longer teaches they follow a similar format

As for the honors program, most all my honors credits have come from BME (about 4 classes, I’m a sophomore) and 3 of them required writing a few page paper, with the 4th one being a paper at the end with a few extra problems on a couple homeworks. BME is, at this point, very honors friendly. But this could change

Do you think the BME honor’s program is worth it? My son is afraid of being housed with people that study all the time and don’t have any fun. He will also need to keep his GPA up if he wants to go to dental school. Do you think non honors BME is just as difficult?

Yes, non honors BME is just as rigorous. For BME, to get honors credit you write a paper at the end of the semester and maybe have an extra homework question here and there. It’s the same class, just with an extra assignment at the end for Honors kids.

As for housing, don’t worry about it, there are plenty of people who party in Buckley. Maybe not as much as in other dorms, but enough where you don’t have to worry about being surrounded by kids who don’t have any fun.
