Not mentioned in the article is that he was seen with his dad leaving campus with all his stuff: http://www.barstoolsports.com/barstoolu/bye-mac-and-cheese-bro/
Unclear if this was mandated by the school or not.

My son’s college has a zero tolerance for drug addiction policy. Getting caught with drugs won’t get you expelled, but being a drug addict will get you expelled.
I’m curious if the same is true about alcohol. Certainly being drunk, having an open container of alcohol, and beating up college employees seems to indicate more than a minor problem.
It really doesn’t at all surprise me that he went to UMass before this.
LOL, why is everyone bad mouthing UMass Amherst? It’s a top-notch public university and a lot of its party-hard reputation is very much overblown. The kid was simply a tool.
Oh lord this story has been big on campus at UMass. I know someone who got a call from this kid asking if he could bail him out. My acquaintance refused, and I think this was the second time he was arrested.
Why the heck did UConn accept him after he was arrested here twice? I think this article says a lot more about UConn than UMass.
That mac and cheese is getting a lot of attention.
This reviewer said it is really good:

Concerning this fellow, it is a real wonder how he was able to get into UConn despite his issues. His parents didn’t do a good job. They let him go to another large flagship rather than keeping his rear end away from school and into an anger management class. He clearly is nowhere near college-ready.
Deleted various posts regarding the quality of UMass and somewhat related subjects. Way off topic.
If a given student has demonstrated violent tendencies towards a member of a campus community or even in the vicinity of the given campus as shown in the video, the college can order a student to immediately vacate the campus in the name of protecting the rest of the campus community as the judicial case is being made/heard.
This was done in several college campuses I know of even before the prevalence of Zero tolerance policies/Columbine/9-11.
I find it interesting how several commenters immediately invoke mental illness as the primary explanation for his behavior.
While possible, IME it’s equally possible this is merely a demonstration of his personality of being an entitled brat who throws temper tantrums and gets violent when things don’t go his way as I’ve observed with a certain subset of Boston area undergrads. Especially those from some fraternities notorious for attracting that personality type according to what I’ve observed from living there and talking with Boston LEOs who had to deal with their vandalism and violent belligerent behavior with random passersby on a regular ongoing basis.
My opinion is that this student is “fighting” something emotionally. Whatever substance he was under the influence of allowed all his anger and insecurity to come to the surface unfiltered. And of course the capturing of his outburst on video just made matters worse, as he has now become the mascot for bad behavior on college campuses nationwide. Perhaps if he views the video it might help him realize he needs to address his issues.
I do think he can recover from this, especially if he makes a public apology and personally apologizes to that manager. He was undeniably physically and emotionally abusive to him and he has to make that right.
We all have prejudices and shortcomings - can you imagine if all of our own thoughts were streamed live? Think most of us could expect backlash from one sector or another.
I don’t agree with the thread title here. Apparently, the student was expelled from his first college for a couple of incidents of drunk and disorderly, including an arrest. I don’t think of those offenses as being so serious that he shouldn’t be able to be admitted to a different school ever. Obviously, the applicant would need to explain that he has now addressed the issues that led to the misbehavior, but two drunk and disorderly charges shouldn’t keep someone out of higher education forever.
This kid may have claimed he addressed his issues, but clearly he did not, and if the reports are correct that he showed up to classes and orientation drunk, he’s an alcoholic and shouldn’t be in college until he sobers up. But I believe in second and third chances.
But he’s had second and third chances. This was his third arrest. And we have no way of knowing whether there were other incidents where he behaved badly but wasn’t arrested.
I’m not saying this kid can’t turn his life around if he wants to do so. However, he should have to have a “time out” of at least a year.
HIs second arrest involved an assault on a police officer. This is bigger than just being publicly intoxicated. Much bigger.
I think this kid’s behavior suggests that he has “issues”–being entitled may be the least of them. He seems to have substance abuse issues and as the assault charges demonstrate, he also has control issues. He’s needs help dealing with all of this and should not be in college until he gets treatment and gets himself under control. I really hope his parents see this and get him the help he needs. Who knows what he said to UConn folks to get admitted? That he’d been in treatment, that he was well, etc.etc.
Jalapeno Bacon Mac and Cheese and fundraisers!
[quote]
HARTFORD, Conn. — Members of the UConn community have begun a couple of fundraisers hoping to offset the negative image generated by a video of a student berating food service workers who refused to sell him jalapeno-bacon macaroni and cheese.
Freshman Sadie Rumsey set up a page on ■■■■■■■■■■■■ to give the workers involved a night out. As of Sunday, her page had collected more than $1,300.
A local restaurant, D.P. Dough, began adding jalapeno to its bacon mac and cheese calzones after last Sunday’s incident. It has donated $600 to a children’s cancer charity from the profits.
Franchise owner Cory Hill says he’s gone through 125 pounds of macaroni and cheese this week, up from the usual 20.
Freshman Luke Gatti is due in court Tuesday on charges of breach of peace and criminal trespass.
^^ Well, it’s good to know that some good can come out of something like this, at least.
The reports I’ve read seem to indicate he was arrested at least twice in a period of a month during his time at UMass. In one court appearance when the presiding judge recognized him from a previous arrest remarked at how in light of the second arrest in less than a few weeks that he won’t go for the “trifecta” and be back in court the third time.
The issue with this student wasn’t merely the thoughts he had, but the fact he opted to openly air out and act violently upon them and in the process, assault and in at least one case, physically injure others.
In short, he opted to act in a manner which aired his prejudices, shortcomings, and violent tendencies publicly…and that includes his decision to drink alcohol in light of his violent past at UMass.
Incidentally, having an open container of alcohol in itself is an arrestable offense in several areas of the NE including Boston and NYC. Several friends from areas where this wasn’t considered a legal offense such as New Orleans were surprised at getting ticketed or sometimes even brought down to be booked by LEOs for carrying an open container of alcohol in public in NYC and Boston.
Another thing which my UConn alum friends/acquaintances, some HS classmates around my age, and I find bewildering is how this student managed to transfer from UMass to UConn in light of his public arrest/disciplinary record considering back when we were applying to colleges, it was much harder for even in-state Connecticut students to gain admission to UConn compared with UMass as OOS.
Knew of several Boston area undergrads at schools like BU, NEU, and even BC who were rejected from UConn as in-state students because their academic stats were below the in-state cutoffs back then.
Back then, UMass was widely considered a “safety OOS”* college for many NE students who either didn’t want to attend their own in-state colleges or in some cases didn’t have the stats to gain admission to their in-state flagships.
@Cobrat so do you think that his actions should preclude him from ever enrolling in another college?
And I do not mean to minimize his behavior, the physical attack on the manager was inexcusable. And a college should closely scrutinize whether he is a safety risk to the rest of their students. However his rantings I view as the ramblings of an immature and confused teenager under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
If he hasn’t sufficiently demonstrated through substantial documentation from professionals and actions/behavior that he has reformed himself and won’t repeat such violent behavior, yes such behavior should preclude him until those conditions are fulfilled. Also keep in mind that in this and previous incidents, he also assaulted people including one incident when he seriously injured a LEO in the process of being arrested. What he did was much more than “immature confused teenage rambling”.
For someone with such demonstrated violent tendencies, there may be something said for a longer period before it’s prudent to reapply…say 5 years after the last violent incident so there’s a longer period to reform and reflect on his violent abhorrent behavior.
Certainly not after less than a year as shown by this student’s past demonstrated behavior and this current behavior.
One must also consider the potential safety and risk to the rest of the campus community alongside his “need” to finish his college education, especially considering he’s already has had multiple arrests for violent behavior.
