UCSB Japanese Language

Are there any ucsb students who have taken Japanese as a class at UCSB? How is it? I've wanted to learn for quite some time and it would be cool to hear from others who have experienced it.

I’m doubling in Econ and Chinese so I have to take some Japanese history class. Honestly our east Asian department faculty are very intellectual and helpful. They all are very experienced in their respective field. Even though I wasn’t a fan of Japanese history, I was able to learn a good amount of knowledge. I recommend you to go check the East Asian department websites and look at the profile of the Japanese Professors. Good luck,

I am Japanese and from what I’ve heard, the Japanese curriculum is very intensive.

Be prepared for midterms every week!

Japanese curriculum? Like the curriculum for japanese kids?

What are you suggesting, Sagert?

If you’re talking about Japanese language classes: i’ve been taking japanese since my freshman year (from japanese 1) and i’m currently in Japanese 6. Some people find it hard but i found first year japanese (1-3) to be really easy. we do get quizzes often, but they’re very manageable. they start rather slow in in Japanese 1, which makes the class very chill, but then it gets more intensive. but it doesn’t get too hard until you reach japanese 6 where you switch from the genki textbook series to a more practical+advanced text and get a long list of kanji to study on your own (up until here they teach you each kanji in class). i don’t remember if i had quizzes every week last year, but right now in J6 i’m getting 1-2 quizzes every single week lol.

anyway, i’ve been enjoying it very much so far, and i’m minoring in japanese so i’ll be taking third year japanese as well. these japanese classes actually make my overall GPA look pretty ;). another thing that i like about it is that you get to know your classmates, a lot of whom will continue to take japanese with you. i knew almost everyone in the class when i started japanese 6, which is nice because i’m pretty much alone in my econ classes.

Yay, I’m so excited now! lol I don’t want to major or minor in Japanese, I’ve just always wanted to learn it. I figured it would probably be hard, but it won’t be complete torture if it’s something I really want to learn  Thanks everyone!
