I’m trying to decide between Virginia Tech and UCSB right now and so I’m listing my pros and cons. Does anyone know what the strongest majors of UCSB are? My dad thinks it’s only worth it to go there (I’m OOS student) if I choose one of the majors they are known for.
Did you get admitted to UCSB for a particular major?
Physics is very strong
UCSB engineering is pretty decent too. Yes Physics, esp. theory one is top ranked. But what if you don’t even like those things. Odd way to approach eh?
If you are in the College of Letters & Science, I hear psychology is pretty strong.
Psychology? Thats sounds good I am interested in it. What kinds of jobs can you get with a psych degree from UCSB?
Psychology is very broad and you can really leverage the major into many, many different industries. My husband was a psych major at UCSB and ended up getting an MBA. Thinking back on my friends that were psych majors-- one is a lawyer, one went to med school, several ended up in business/sales/recruiting, one is in advertising, and another moved to Hawaii to teach 3rd grade. Ironically, I can’t think of any that became psychologists, although I’m sure many in the major do! Good luck to you!
Colleges offer 2 types of degrees under one roof. Some are more vocational in nature such as accounting, engineering, nursing, etc. and on the other hand there are the liberal-arts majors like Psych or History or Anthropology. None of the liberal-arts majors lead directly to a career path (except perhaps as a professor in that subject) nor are they intended to. It may also be applicable to some career fields but that is not the main goal; if you want a degree that definitely prepares you for a job, pick a vocational major.
As pointed out by @BayAreaRecruiter you can use a liberal arts degree as a base for many different fields. The smart student spends her/his early years in college exploring different careers thru the career center, job fairs, talking with alums, etc. and then having a general direction in mind does the volunteer work and internships that make them a competitive candidate once graduated.
