I was interested in applying to UCSB and UCD in a biology major for pre-med. Which school is better for this field? How competitive is each school in this major? How’s the environment for UCSB and UCD?
Also, do you think an A- student in high school will be able to get through the pre-med programs considering the curve and competition?
If you are planning to apply to any of the UC’s for Biology, cast a wide net so I would apply to both and worry about which school is better for Pre-med/Biology once you have your acceptance in hand.
Both will give you an excellent education and much will be up to you on maintaining a high Undergrad GPA, finding medically related EC’s and studying for the MCAT vs. the school you attend.
Most students that start off with the intention of going to Medical school do not make it, so explore other options when researching these schools and being an A- student should not be a hinderance as long as you are willing to work hard.
What may be a hinderance are your Stats in getting into these schools in the first place: UC capped weighted GPA, Test scores, HS course rigor, EC’s and essays are all considered in the application review.

The advantage for UCD is there is 2 UCD Medical school campuses: One in Davis and the other in Sacramento. There are also several hospitals and clinics within Davis/Sacramento area to help with your Medical EC’s.
UCSB does have hospitals/clinics in the area but not as easily accessible.
You really need to visit since environment is a very personal choice.
Best of luck.
