Even though the information you provided is very helpful, I found out that freshmen are not required to live in dorms (anymore?) when I went on the UCSC tour this month.

i still appreciate all the informationa you provided though =)

after carefully reading this, i come up with some questions too

since Kresge only has apartments, is it more expensive than other colleges in ucsc?

2.what are the differences between college nine and ten?

what about college eight? since it's not mentioned at all, i wonder how it is like there

i did read the website on each college so i did acquire the themes of each college as well as some general informations about them and i did go on a tour..however the sites dont really satisfy me and the tour leader only took us to two colleges..
im looking for some insider's view
thank you =)

i'm only a prospective student and i havent even visited the campus yet but i'll answer the questions i think i know

from what i've read, it would be porter. it's known to be a creative/artsy school with a big central square, which the other colleges lack

this depends on what your interests are. people have said the best way to tell is to visit the schools

1. since Kresge only has apartments, is it more expensive than other colleges in ucsc?
yes, apartments are more expensive, but i dont think freshmen are allowed to get apartments their first year

2.what are the differences between college nine and ten?
college 10 was built a couple years after 9, other than that they are identical in building structure. both are close to the social sciences department.

from the reading i've done so far, all i know about it is that it has a good view.

I'm going to be attending UCSC in the fall of 08 and i am having trouble picking my college also. I am going to be entering as an undeclared life and health science major. So far I like crown, stevenson, and porter, and possibly merrill or kresge. i've read a lot about each one of these colleges but i need more personal views from people who are actually experiencing living in these colleges. the reason i like crown is because i am very into biology, and kinda geeky lol i like stevenson because of the "self" and society theme, plus i heard it has one of the best views, i like porter because art is also a very large part of who i am and love to be around creative people. now merrill i have just heard some good things about and kresge i heard was very hippie-like which seems laid back and nice. i just need help deciding.. i feel like if i go to crown i will fit in because of my major, but maybe porter has more kinds of people i would like to meet... but stevenson seems nice too... im just so confused. what are the pros and cons of these colleges? what are the people like from each of these colleges? and imput would be appreciated!

oh and feel free to talk to me on aim - riphedwigxo

Hellooo.. I'm a student from Wisconsin. I'm attending Santa Cruz in the fall of 08 and am going to be living in Merrill College. I have a few days to decide if this is where I want to be. I've been reading through lots of posts and everyone seems to be skipping over Merrill. I'd really like some help. I have about a week before my final decision is made.. and I'm thinking about switching to a diff. college if I can't gain any insight. I know what the other colleges are like.. so basically I'm just wondering what the general opinion of MY college is. thank you so much

My brother stayed at Merrill 10 years ago. He thought it was alright. People are fairly quiet, there is a spanish theme and lots of murals on the walls. The dorms are fairly clean and the dining area is band new. There is quite a hill to get up to the dining hall but that is not too big of a deal. The honors writing program is in that college if you were interested. Merrill is very close to the main stuff at UCSC: the gym, bookstore, library.

I say just stick with it because you are sure to find some nice people there. I myself feel a little uneasy coming from San Diego because my friends are going elsewhere. It'll all work out.

Hello! I am planning on attending UC Santa Cruz Fall 2010, and right now i am deciding between Porter or Crown. I just would like to hear the advantages and disadvantages of both. I would really appreciate it :D

i am going to major in bio. i don’t mind the drug scene. i don’t like prepps. i play video games, ahaha :] i play tennis.

HELP ME OUT!

I can only advise you on Porter since I don’t know too much about Crown other than it is close to science hill. The Porter dorms are brand new and we have a new dining hall so it’s pretty decent living there. Also if you play tennis, there are courts just across the street at C8. Most of my classes this year seemed to be over by science hill and it is definitely walkable from Porter. The only disadvantage would be if the current dorms under construction were not finished for fall and you were assigned to one of them. Porter B was not finished and it was a pain, but now, they are totally nice. There seems to be a good mix of people at Porter ( not all art majors) and now that the dining hall has reopened it’s been easier to hang with friends.

I am going to UCSC in the fall of 2010 and i really like college nine and ten but no one knows anything about them. I need information about them nowwwwww please somone who lives there or knows people who live there hellllppppp meeeeee !!!

Thanks :)

What are the demographics like at Porter?

@anatinkervalle: Whadaya wanna know? Facilities? Room types? The kind of people who live there? Dining? Give us some pointers here.

hello,

I’ll be an international transfer student fall 2010, I’ll probably be living in campus and i have to choose and rank my college preferences. I’m a senior student, my major y sociology. I have heard colleges 9 and 10 could be my best options.
Considering location, international students and costs, Does anyone have some suggestions?

Thans

I’ve heard that 9/10 is where most of the international students live (I don’t remember why). Either way, 9/10 are the newest so they have the nicest facilities, and they attract all kinds of people. No matter what your interests are you will find similar people at college 9 or 10.

9/10 mostly has the international students because of the ILC (International Living Center) is located there.

to anyone familiar with the colleges at ucsc-
i’m kind of the stereotypical party girl/social butterfly. i love going out to parties and the beach and just meeting people. i did cheerleading in high school and started “sisters club”, kind of like a mini sorority. i’m considering joining a sorority in college. i don’t have a problem with hippies/artsy people but wouldn’t want to be at the ultimate hippie art college where i wouldn’t really fit in. i’m fine with the whole drinking scene and i don’t really have a problem with the drug scene as long as it’s not too extreme. i just want a place where i can meet lots of “normal” people and socialize! i’ve heard colleges 9 and 8 are the most suited for my preferences… if any of you have any input i would really appreciate it asap! thank you!
also i was really hoping to go to cal poly or uc santa barbara if that’s helpful at all to giving any input! thanks again.

Hi I’m interested in both college 8 and college 9,

thanks for the help
