UCSC or Colorado School of Mines for CS?

I can imagine campus is a ghost town right now. Since they plan to bring in about 2/3 capacity for the dorms in the Fall, hopefully there will be more energy again at that point. Good to know that profs and TAs are accessible and welcoming.

Thank you!

Oh that’s awesome! So far, I haven’t had any trouble getting the classes I need. The vibe at SC is very similar to SB. Downtown Santa Cruz feels identical to State Street in SB. Lots of restaurants, ice cream and smoothie stores, bands always playing, etc… It’s going to be an easy lifestyle transition from Santa Barbara to Santa Cruz.

Thanks everyone for the info! It’s tough this year and I appreciate the help.

My son never took the bus unless he was going off campus. They can be very crowded. Since a lot of the CS classes are so large, they are not offered in the engineering complex but the larger classrooms on campus. These are in the Classroom Unit Building, Theimann, and the Media Theatre. These are all pretty centrally located, but look at the map and see what the distances look like.

California politics tend to lean left due state demographics and some historical political choices made by political parties in the 1990s. Of course, college-age people generally tend to lean left compared to adults overall.

Generally so, though it seems Mines mirrors Colorado in its mix of political viewpoints.

Anyone know how “in your face” students can be at UCSC regarding political views? My son had some concerns about general college atmospheres that may be more of the “if you’re not with us, you’re against us” attitude. Again, my son is pretty apolitical; for him, the level of political discourse in our country this past decade has cemented his desire to not be overtly political.

That describes pretty much all politics these days, not just around colleges, because the noisiest ones promote such viewpoints.

Thank you for your comments and help here. My son decided to accept his UCSC offer and will a banana slug come fall quarter!
