D received an update from UCSC. She’s an Env Sci major. Seems that they won’t finalize a decision on her until she communicates that she’ll take PHYS 6A equivalent before Fall ‘22 with a “C” or higher. Well, hindsight 20-20, she probably should have taken it beforehand, but other UCs don’t require this class. For example, she’s gotten the TAG at UCD and I don’t see anything on Davis’ website that indicates that this class is required for admission into the Env Sci program.
We actually asked UCD if she should take Physics or more Bio this semester. They said BIO, and it just goes to show you how different each and every UC can be re their admissions process. We reviewed the UCSC website and sure enough, they do communicate that they require that class. Unfortunately for UCSC, she probably took more math, chem, bio than needed at the expense of physics.
UCD still the #1 choice, but I also feel that it’s smart to have options. You never know, she could absolutely fall in love w/the UCSC program vs. Davis or decide that she wants to be closer to home (1 vs. 3 hr). We might also be in the same boat with UCSB, which was the other school she applied to from the UCs.
They’re giving her until Friday to communicate her intentions (what class she’ll take, and where she’ll take it)…
I’m thinking that we communicate to UCSC that she’d take Physics over summer. Hopefully, that’s enough for them to offer her conditional admission (3.4GPA, strong extracurriculars good PiQs). I still believe that she’ll ultimately commit to UCD but it seems like the best move to get back to UCSC quickly re her willingness to take Physics over the summer so she can lock up admission at multiple UCs.
Yep, just respond that she will take Physics over the summer at XXX, hopefully you have some community college class schedules out. Best to have all options available. Similar situation for my son, missing an Econ class for UCSC Envir Stud, so he responded on Mon that he is taking it over the summer at our local CCC. Waiting for Admission decision, assuming it will be a yes.
Yup, that’s what we’ll do. have to say that it can sometimes be a challenge to keep track of all of the different UCs and noting that it’s not always apples to apples as to what one campus expects vs. another.
Oh well, not the end of the world by any means. The fact that the campus reached out vs. rejecting makes me feel that they’ll conditionally accept once we agree to taking that final class.
Really? Because per assist.org, UCD does recommend a year-long physics sequence for the B.S. in Environmental Science & Management prior to transfer, although it recommends only the non-calculus-based physics.
Whereas, per assist.org, UCSC, indeed requires, at a minimum, the first quarter of a year-long calculus-based physics course to be completed prior to transfer and strongly recommends that the remaining two quarters be completed prior to transfer for the B.S. in Environmental Science.
Did the transfer counselor at your daughter’s community college utilize assist.org when advising her?
If your daughter has not taken any physics course in community college, then taking a calculus-based physics course during a 6-week summer session may be a shock to her system. You may want to line up a private tutor, if you decide to go that route.
I got a similar email saying one of my courses didn’t transfer and that I needed to 1. finish my semester w/ a 2.0 and 2. take a course over the summer as conditions of acceptance IF I’m accepted. I hope this means your daughter and I have good odds! I doubt they’d send the email if not accepted, or even probably accepted, after all (but I won’t get my hopes up)
I hope that the come back with a “conditional acceptance” shortly after communicating that you would commit to filling out their prerequisites over the summer. I have to imagine that they would.
Still waiting after sending email reply on Monday.
Surprised your daughter got in Davis without Physics. Still waiting to hear back from UCD for Envir Mgmt Prot.
It is very difficult to try to straddle the different Transfer requirements for each UC campus and each CSU campus when preparing. My son just picked his #1 and focused on those requirements. May or may not have been the best plan
yep, I responded abt 2 days ago and I just got an email from them confirming that the community college I picked would be fine if I get accepted. now when will they send the results out?! haha
Amen to that! It’s a real challenge, and especially considering that we moved to an area where the population base is a bit smaller so less CC classes than smack dab in the middle of the Bay Area where we were previously located.
She got the TAG there, so perhaps that’s why. UCD stated (via Assist) that its recommended but not required. To your point, my daughter applied to multiple schools and I suppose that we should have been looking at UCSC’s specific criteria.
Honestly, she just wants to get to the UC. If she has to take one or two additional quarters to graduate vs. just getting “in and out” in two years she’s completely cool with that. I revert back to my initial comment that she reached out directly to the UCD student advisor who pushed her towards more biology vs. taking physics for entering. Probably should have had the same conversation w/UCSC at that time, and we would have gotten a different answer (or, take Physics AND more Bio). Oh well, they’re giving her the option to take in in the summer so the fact that they’re asking this of her is a good (I think) omen.
The Blue and Gold Scholarship: If you are eligible, your systemwide tuition and fees will be fully covered by scholarship or grant money. The plan combines all sources of scholarship and grant awards you receive (federal, state, UC and private) to go toward covering your tuition and fees.
So the Cal Grant covers tuition while the University grant and the Pell grant covers other expenses which are part of the Blue and Gold Scholarship, just not stated on the FA package as such.
Still waiting… UCSC asked that we respond with a commitment to finish up the PHYS prerequisite over the summer. We found a class at a CCC which they accepted but… we’re still waiting for conditional acceptance.
