P.S.: I hope your reading this clairesolo ! ;)

Must be right, Wis WELL above Michigan.

dude this is grad school. No way Berkeley can be ranked that high with it's Ugrad program.

Well I dont think the rankings are ONLY for grad school or ONLY for undergrad.....I guess its the study must've been based on the overall standard of the university(including opportunities available at a respective school)........frankly I dont care.......coz UCSD comes at a cool #13......Go Tritons !!

Besting UCLA, interesting.

I'd like to see the criteria used for this ranking.

ive seen this before, i thought it was bogus, i mean northwestern at 31, 18 spots BEHIND ucsd? and duke is 1 spot below northwestern.

I think Shanghai Jiao Tong's rankings give more weight to science fields and research. That's why UCSD is up there.

Personally, I find THES rankings a better assessment of schools in general. The following are the rankings for the first 50 universities in the world.

2005 2004
rank rank Name
1 1 Harvard University
2 3 Massachusetts Institute of Technology
3 6 Cambridge University
4 5 Oxford University
5 7 Stanford University
6 2 University of California, Berkeley
7 8 Yale University
8 4 California Institute of Technology
9 9 Princeton University
10 27 Ecole Polytechnique
11= 52 Duke University
11= 11 London School of Economics
13 14 Imperial College London
14 23 Cornell University
15 17 Beijing University
16 12 Tokyo University
17= 20 University of California, San Francisco
17= 13 University of Chicago
19 22 Melbourne University
20 19 Columbia University
21 10 ETH Zurich
22 18 National University of Singapore
23 16 Australian National University
24= 30 Ecole Normale Sup

that above list is nice, ucsd is probably a top 50 school in the whole world :)

Yeah the THES rankings seem believable......but whats with UT Austin above UCLA n UCSD ......ARE THEY NUTS?????The only field in which UT Austin is competitive enough to be placed ALONGSIDE UCLA N UCSD is engineering.....

btw what's the full form of THES ?
Also I've heard of some rankings by a LONDON UNIVERSITY(UCSD=24,UT Austin=13 i think)..........how credible are these rankings and what are they based on?

A lot of these rankings are very one-sided. It looks like research is a big factor in the rankings, which explains why ucb is so high up. If these rankings are based on sciences/engineering, then it's very feasible that UCSD is close to the top of the list (#11 engineering school, top 10 science school).

I dunno, but it seems to me that the USNWR are based more on liberal arts (HYP at the top and MIT at like 7 or 8).

I guess for the best rankings, you should look at how schools are ranked in YOUR area of interest (for example, I'm BioE and UCSD is top 3 consistently, so I'm happy :) ).

The first ranking was not based on anything scientific..it was just name recognition in China i think

woah, seems like UCSD is more recognized in China than in America

hmmm uci is not on the list

FYI - The University of Toronto is in Canada, not the US.

http://www.washingtonmonthly.com/features/2006/0609.national.html

UCSD is sixth in the world.

Wow, rankings sure do mean a lot, especially considering how tweaking the methodology a little drastically changes the order.

Yeah, the Washington Monthly one was to commemorate those universities which they believed were underappreciated for their services to the country. Totally different methodology than other ranking systems.

Seriously--when UCR is ranked above Harvard, it really is difficult to take the rankings seriously (no offense to UCR)

you don't even know Harvard!

I take those rankings perfectly seriously. They measure exactly what they are designed to measure (i.e., a combination of biased, weighted factors), not how good a university is.

Guys, all of those rankings are different.

SJTU rankings are basically based on science & research, which IMO is very accurate. Have you seen UCSD's R&D stats? Shiet.

THES is more on prestige, which also makes sense for the most part.

Washington Monthly's rankings are based on what universities do for the country. It has nothing to do with prestige or with what school is better to attend. It's simpy about what school produces more good for the nation. What helps the nation more...? The school that really only rich kids can afford to go to? Or the great public schools that (almost) anyone can afford to go. Go figure.

Chill out. UCSD is an awesome school and has pleanty of prestigue and whatnot. Don't get so worked up over rankings :)
